Astaxanthin Found to Improve Cognitive Function and Memory

Astaxanthin is becoming known in scientific circles as “a potent candidate for brain food, with the potential for slowing or stopping chronic neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Astaxanthin protects neurons by preventing oxidative damage and quenching free radicals that injure brain cells in these conditions. A recent human study found that astaxanthin reduced the accumulation of a toxic dementia-related metabolite in the red blood cells of healthy older adults.

Astaxanthin Anti-Cancer Mechanisms
Astaxanthin’s multiple mechanisms of action make it an ideal candidate for the prevention and adjuvant treatment of many different kinds of cancer. By quenching free radical production in oxidatively stressed tissues, astaxanthin can prevent the DNA damage that is required to initiate many forms of cancer. By subduing inflammatory mediators such as COX-2 and NF-kB, astaxanthin may prevent cancer promotion, the step that allows potentially cancerous cells to blossom into full-blown tumors. By supporting healthy intercellular communication, astaxanthin improves tissue resistance to cancers. And by impairing enzymes like matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) that cancer cells use to break down tissue barriers, astaxanthin can help prevent tumor invasion and metastatic spread.

Where Does Astaxanthin Come From?
Astaxanthin, the red plant pigment that belongs to the same carotenoid family as beta-carotene, lycopene, and lutein, and gives plants and fruit their vibrant colours. The algae produces Astaxanthin in response to stresses such as excessive sunlight, changes in the water pH, or lack of nutrients, for example. The Astaxanthin shields the algae from the crisis, and absorbs free radicals to protect it from injury. And the Astaxanthin offers such potent antioxidant protection, these algae can survive up to 30 years without water during times of drought. Once the water reappears, the algae pops back to life.

Do You Know? Astaxanthin Never Becomes A Pro-Oxidant

Some Ant-Oxidant become exhausted after handling one free radical (Eg. Vitamins C and E), and they cannot go on to grab another free radical. And sometimes these depleted antioxidants proceed down the line to now become pro-oxidants. In other words, they can actually “switch teams” and become free radicals themselves, which is harmful. Astazandra contains natural “Astaxanthin” never ever becomes a pro-oxidant, never becomes a free radical.

Free Radicals VS Astaxanthin

A free radical can be defined as a toxic, unstable molecule that attacks and steals electrons from other molecules.
Now these other molecules could be enzymes. Or they could be critical proteins within the cell. Or they could even be our DNA. They inflict damage in and on the cell.
The damage that free radicals cause our cells are called oxidation.
Astaxanthin is a powerful, anti-aging antioxidant that can prevent, repair, and reverse free radical damage in the body.

New Study: Astaxanthin Lowered Oxidative Stress in Smokers and Overweight People

A comparison study of astaxanthin and other carotenoids showed that Astaxanthin displayed the highest antioxidant activity against free radicals. Astaxanthin improved blood flow, and lowered oxidative stress in smokers and overweight people.

Astaxanthin Can Improve Heart Health

Astaxanthin supplements are produced by harvesting the compound from the alga Haematococcus Pluvialis, the richest source of astaxanthin on the planet. These supplements were approved by the FDA in 1999 and are considered. When it comes to astaxanthin benefits, it is a shoo-in with regard to cardiovascular protection. In addition to preventing lipid oxidation, a Japanese study revealed that daily supplementation with astaxanthin significantly reduced triglyceride levels and raised notoriously hard-to-increase beneficial HDL cholesterol. In general, standard dosing consists of 2 to 12 mg daily for as little as two weeks and up to six months.
