World Sight Day
LOVE YOUR EYES

Why is World Sight Day celebrated?
World Sight Day is celebrated to raise global awareness about blindness and visual impairment, highlighting that many of these conditions are preventable or treatable. The day, observed annually on the second Thursday of October, also promotes eye health by encouraging regular check-ups, advocating for equitable access to eye care services, and educating people on preventing vision loss.

Raise Awareness: To shine a spotlight on the importance of eye health and the prevalence of preventable blindness and vision impairment worldwide.

Promote Eye Care: To advocate for and provide information on how to protect and maintain good eye health, including regular check-ups and early detection of issues.

Encourage Action: To motivate governments, healthcare providers, and communities to address vision-related problems, improve access to eye care services, and support individuals in need.

Debunk Myths: To spread accurate information about vision and eye conditions, dispelling common misconceptions.

Highlight Key Issues: To address specific causes of blindness such as cataracts, glaucoma, uncorrected refractive errors, and diabetic retinopathy.

Eye donation awareness aims to educate people about the importance of donating eyes after death to restore sight for those with corneal blindness.

Key aspects of eye donation awareness:

What is eye donation?
It involves donating one's eyes after death to be used for corneal transplantation, a procedure that replaces damaged corneas with healthy ones from donors.

Who can donate?
Practically anyone, regardless of age, s*x, or blood group, can donate their eyes. Those with conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or who wear glasses can also donate.

Why is it important?
Corneal blindness is a major cause of vision loss, and eye donation is the only way to restore sight for those affected by it.

How to donate:
To become a registered eye donor, contact your local eye bank.

What happens after death?
The eyelids are closed, the fan is switched off (air conditioning can be used), and the head is slightly raised with a pillow. Prompt contact with the nearest eye bank is crucial.

Debunking myths:
Awareness campaigns often address misconceptions about eye donation, such as the idea that it disfigures the body or is not allowed by certain religions.

National Eye Donation Fortnight:
This period is dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging people to pledge their eyes.

Impact: Eye donation can restore vision for at least two people suffering from corneal blindness, giving them the gift of sight and a chance to live a more fulfilling life.
