Off-Duty Emergency Responders Save Father-of-the-Bride
During Wedding Reception
At a wedding reception in Sarasota, Florida, the father of the bride suddenly collapsed during a choreographed dance with his daughter. The scene quickly turned chaotic, but Kord Webb, a firefighter/EMT and the bride’s cousin’s husband, sprang into action. Stacy Boyce, the wedding photographer and also a firefighter/EMT, joined Kord to help. They assessed the condition of Brad, the father of the bride, found no pulse, and immediately began CPR. Kord performed textbook-perfect compressions while Stacy delivered a shock with an AED, which revived Brad within seconds. “It felt like I was on autopilot, I didn’t think, I just acted and used the skills I’ve learned,” Kord said.
Medics arrived shortly after and took over, with Brad regaining consciousness and even joking with them. Stacy reflected on the experience, noting how her two worlds of photography and emergency response collided. “I used to be able to compartmentalize things because I was wearing a uniform and drove an ambulance. But this time it was like my two worlds were colliding,” she shared. The incident highlighted the importance of CPR training for everyone.
Both Stacy and Kord emphasized the need for laypeople to be prepared to act in emergencies. “It takes a village. Lots of people need to be trained in CPR. Laypeople need to be trained,” Stacy said. The family provided a quick synopsis of Brad’s health to the medics, noting he had no history of a heart condition and no known risk factors. The successful rescue underscored the critical role of CPR training in saving lives.
