This patient came to me for a routine check up, with no symptoms. She was diabetic since 12 years. On examination, she had perfect vision, but the retina showed presence of new vessels which are seen in advanced cases of diabetic retinopathy. An angiogram of the eye confirmed the same. I have started laser treatment to halt the progression of the retinopathy.

This case exemplifies the importance of retina screening in diabetic patients. Even though the patient did not have any symptoms, the retina was already affected, and this can be picked up only on examination. Giving treatment at the correct time can halt the disease progression and prevent the blindness that would result from untreated retinopathy leading to retinal detachment.

Every diabetic should ensure they get annual retina examinations !! The blindness due to diabetic retinopathy can be prevented by simple eye examinations !

Any eye irritation which persists for a while should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist. This patient had some irritation since 2 days, which was not settling with eye drops. When he came to me I examined him and found this foreign particle stuck on the cornea, which was clearly causing the discomfort. It took less than a minute to remove it, and the relief in symptoms was instataneous.
Dont self medicate, always get an opinion from a specialist.

Who wouldn't want binocular vision 😃 Ensure that LAZY EYE in your child is treated, so that he/she can use both eyes equally, enjoy binocular vision and the benefits that it brings with it .. the ability to judge the depth and speed of objects.

Anti Vegf injections are routinely used to treat swelling in the retina that arises due to diabetes, age related degeneration or a block in the retinal veins. The picture attached is an OCT image of a patient with a retinal vein occlusion, which has resulted in a swelling at the retina, causing a drop in vision. The anti vegf injection is given into the eye, and within a few days the swelling starts to reduce and vision starts improving. Though there is a need for repeated injections, this has been one of the best discoveries for people suffering from retinal ailments, expanding the treatment opportunities and offering excellent results.

The ensuing blindness due to diabetes can be prevented.. By regular eye examinations, and timely interventions. A survey showed that in 2010.. 833,690 people all over the world had lost their eyesight due to diabetic retinopathy. That's 8 Lakh people unnecessarily blind !! Lack of screening facilities in many underdeveloped regions could contribute to this figure. But what about us.. Living in urban India ?? Where there are still hundreds of diabetics who aren't even aware that they need an eye examination .. and that diabetes can cost them their sight ! Spread the word .. increase awareness .. and stop a person from forever losing vision !!
