New insight into formation of the human embryo

Pioneering research led by experts from the University of Exeter's Living Systems Institute has provided new insight into formation of the human embryo.

The team of researchers discovered a unique regenerative property of cells in the early human embryo.

The first tissue to form in the embryo of mammals is the trophectoderm, which goes on to connect with the uterus and make the placenta. Previous research in mice found that trophectoderm is only made once.

In the new study, however, the research team found that human early embryos are able to regenerate trophectoderm. They also showed that human embryonic stem cells grown in the laboratory can similarly continue to produce trophectoderm and placental cell types.

These findings show unexpected flexibility in human embryo development and may directly benefit assisted conception (IVF) treatments. In addition, being able to produce early human placental tissue opens a door to finding causes of infertility and miscarriage.

The study is published in the leading international peer-review journal Cell Stem Cell on Wednesday, April 7th 2021.

Professor Austin Smith, Director of the Living Systems Institute and co-author of the study added, said: "Before Dr Guo showed me her results, I did not imagine this should be possible. Her discovery changes our understanding of how the human embryo is made and what we may be able do with human embryonic stem cells"

Epidemiologists analyzed the potential impact of endocrine disruptors on semen quality of men whose mothers were working at the early stages of their pregnancy. Their results show that men who have been exposed in utero to products known to contain endocrine disruptors are twice more likely to have semen volume and total s***m count per ej*******on below the reference values set by the WHO.

ISAR

The Indian society of Assisted reproduction is one of the prime organisations in the field of infertility in the world, with more than 3600 members it stands only next to ASRM in its strength. It is this strength that we are going to build on this year. The world is looking at us now, in terms of the amount of work we are doing and the kind of professionals we have in our organisation, we are destined for greater heights. The Focus of ISAR this year is going to be to take india towards better practices, better outcomes. We have done immensely well in establishing ART in the country but focus now has to shift to standardise it. The events that have been planned the year are all in accordance to this theme. The major highlights of the year are going to be the consensus statements with the sister organisations and thats something that will definitely impact infertility practice in india. We also have 7 amazing masterclasses to look up to covering important but widely neglected topics, so look out for them. The YUVA ISAR will work to promote our extremely talented youngsters and the embryology ISAR for our backbone- the embryologists. This year will also include a lot on the social front and Our Public forums and Youtube films would help educating our masses. Lets not leave the paramedical behind and I intend to start a fertility nurse course this year. We also plan to hold a Hep B vaccination for our staff on 25th may and also celebrate a fertility awareness week in November. Much planning has gone into the making of this year and it can only be possible with the support of all of You and I look forward to your active participation in all activities under the ISAR banner this year. towards better practices, better outcomes.
