Teeth may be the most essential organ elephants have. An African elephant may consume 200 kg of vegetation a day, an Asian elephant about 140. To process that quantity of food they need to chew constantly wearing down each tooth until it's no longer useful and falls out.
Most mammals have two sets of teeth in their lifetimes. Elephants go through six. Unlike human teeth, which sprout from below the gums, the elephant's start at the back of the mouth and move forward like a conveyor belt.
