On the occasion of the WORLD SKIN HEALTH DAY, we at SKIN ESSENCE CLINIC would like to inform you about two current burning issues in the context of INDIAN DERMATOLOGY. These are topical steroid abuse on the face for skin lightening and on the body for fungal rashes.
Creams containing steroids form an essential part in the armoury of dermatologists and form the mainstay in the treatment of conditions like psoriasis and eczema. However, injudicious and irrational prescription of this molecule can lead to serious adverse effects. This is specifically relevant in the current scenario with the rampant over-the-counter purchase and abuse of topical steroids which is posing problems for patients and doctors.
Topical steroids have been part and parcel of various lightening creams. Long term and injudicious use of such creams can lead to pimples, pus filled boils, dry flaky skin, white patches, excessive hair growth and irreversible issues like thinning of skin with visibility of underlying blood vessels. Their use is like any other addiction and once the patient realises that on stopping the cream they look darker than before, they restart abusing the cream leading to long term side effects. So we would request you to consult your nearby skin specialist before using any lightening creams over the face or body.
Another issue currently faced is the abuse irrational 'MASALA' creams containing steroids, antifungals and antibiotics. These are commonly purchased over-the-counter for fungal rashes on the body especially on the private parts. They give the patient temporary relief from the itch but allow the fungal rash to grow more and more. Ultimately, when the patient consults a dermatologist, the infection takes a longer course of plain antifungal creams and oral antifungal medications to cure. Patients come to dermatologists with extensive side effects due to long term abuse of the 'MASALA' creams like stretch marks and white patches which are extremely difficult to get rid of.
We would request everyone to be proud of their skin colour and not abuse steroid based lightening creams. In case any rash on the body does not resolve with moisturisers or calamine lotion, please consult your nearby dermatologist and do not self medicate.
Wishing all of you a great year of skin care ahead!!
Regards,
