These days, more than 50 percentage of our patients are with fever. It causes lot of tension among parents, school absentism and disturbance in daily life.
Simple answers to few queries:
1. why fever in my child?
We boil milk at home to killl disease germs. Similarly, when disease germs enter our body, nature boils our body to kill germs. Fever is nature's own defence mechanism.
2. my child has high fever!
degree of fever does not determine severity of infection. Usually viral infections have high spike of fever to begin with.
3. my child has suffered with 3 episodes of fever in last one month!
Child should be assessed clinically and if required with investigations. However, in majority, the reports are normal. These recurrent episodes of fever are recurrent viral infections due to transmission of infection from one child to other.

When I hear that my child does not feel hungry, I am taken back in time to 1978. We as students were traveling from Agra to Delhi. Our bus got delayed. We were extremely hungry at 12 midnight. At our request, driver stopped the bus at roadside dhabba.Five of us were pure vegetarian. On enquiry, dhabba person said that he can offer egg omlette but he has no veg item. We were hungry. At our repeated requests, he took out dry rotis, may be one day old.We agreed to that. But we needed something to apply to these rotis. They had neither stock of cooked vegetables, dal, pickles nor stock to prepare these tems. We were desperate with hunger. One of us noticed utensils, which were used for preparing that day's vegetables and dal. Though they were empty, some eatables were stuck at side of utensils. We took these utensils, applied those dry rotis to the side of utensils and relished our dinner. We were grateful to dhabba people and god for our meal.
Hunger is a basic emotion or feeling of every living being. Salute to all NGOs, who have been feeding hungry people during their difficult times.

1. If your child is excessively jealous, it is because you only congratulate them when they successfully complete something and not when they improve at something even if they don’t successfully complete it.
2. If your child intentionally disturbs you, it is because you are not physically affectionate enough.
3. If your child is openly defiant, it is because you openly threaten to do something but don’t follow through.
4. If your child is secretive, it is because they don’t trust that you won’t blow things out of proportion

Our children create beauty in the universe. They have unlimited imagination without inhibition. Besides our regular teachers, children are also our teachers. They give us smile for no reson, brighten up our day. They are grateful while receiving gift of tiny objects. We can see satisfaction in their eyes. They fight with siblings, friends but the next moment they are laughing, playing together. They teach us to give up grudges quickly.

My child does not eat well. It is a common concern among parents and grandparents. The story is same even at pediatrician's home
How do we deal with it?
It is important to recognise the following few facts:
1.1 Hunger is a natural need. A sparrow or ant's mother does not make them eat. Whenever, they feel hungry, they start searching for food.
1.2 Hunger is such a strong desire that it can motivate a honest person to steal.
1.3 Sometimes, a child fills her stomach with milk diet or multiple snacks between meals. Then there is no place for regular meals.
2.Growth rate of the child becomes less after one year age. A child gains about 4-6 kg in the first year. Thereafter, it gains 1.5 -2 kg per year upto puberty. It implies that the child has to put more amount in fixed deposit in the first year, Thereafter the requirement is less. Therefore, appetite goes down.
3. Phase of negativism - child deveops its own ego at about one year age. If we force any thing on him, it goes into phase of negativism. Forced feeding is countered with the matching aggression. In fact some children start vomiting at sight of food. Avoid forced feeding. Let him/ her decide, what to eat, when to eat and how much to eat.
4. Phase of imitation- child prefers to eat with its own hands. He wants to eat whatever food, family members are eating.
5. A simple logic - with whatever amount of food, child is active and cheerful, that intake is sufficient. It only means that engine of the body has become more energy efficient.
Next time, we are tense about child's apettite, pnder at the above points.
