New Technology for Myopia control

Myopia is a condition in which the child has a refractive error and needs to wear minus lenses to see clearly. The spectacle number keeps increasing every year as the eyeball grows.

In addition to the existing treatment modalities, we now have DIMS ( Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments) lenses to control myopia progression.

The DIMS technology works on the concept of creating simultaneous defocus, during both distance and near viewing - one plane on the retina due to the single vision zone(s) of the lens, and one plane creating myopic defocus due to the +3.50D defocus lenslets.

Studies have shown that the Children wearing the DIMS spectacle lenses had myopia progression significantly reduced by 52% and axial elongation by 62% over 2 years. (In Hong Kong population)

These lenses are now available in India and we are excited to see how our kids fare with these glasses.

WORLD CEREBRAL PALSY DAY

October 6 marks World Cerebral Palsy Day. The aim is to create awareness and and support the people with CP, to embrace diversity and to help create a more accessible health care for all.

Cerebral palsy affects more than 17 million people worldwide.
Visual impairments are strikingly common among children with Cerebral Palsy. These include Squint or strabismus, cataracts and refractive issues.

An early diagnosis and timely management followed by visual rehabilitation is highly helpful to these children and also helps in their over all development as majority of what a child learns is through visual inputs.

Glaucoma is a condition in which the pressure inside the eye increases, this can cause irreversible damage to the optic nerve

It is a " Silent thief" and may lead to irreversible loss of vision even before you realize.

You are at a higher risk if
1. There is a family history
2. You have used steroid eye drops for a long time
3. History of injury to the eye

Redness of eyes is a common symptom which could be due to various causes. It is usually caused due to allergy, eye fatigue, over-wearing contact lenses, or common eye infections (conjunctivitis). However, redness of the eye sometimes can signal a more serious eye condition or disease, such as glaucoma.
Indiscriminate use of steroid eye drops or self medication can have serious side effects and could be vision threatening.
Do consult with your eye doctor to determine the cause of your red eyes and receive the most effective treatment options.

KERATOCONUS : WHAT IS IT, HOW TO IDENTIFY, WHEN TO CONSULT, WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS?

If a child constantly rubs his eyes, many times parents ignore it as habitual or they feel that the child is trying to seek attention. But most of the times it is a sign of an underlying Allergic Eye Disease , Uncorrected refractive error or an Undiagnosed Keratoconus.

Symptoms first appear during puberty or the late teens and include blurred vision and sensitivity to light and glare.

Usually patients with keratoconus will develop extreme myopia (nearsightedness) with very high irregular astigmatism. This causes their vision to be much more distorted than just normal blur. Plus there are much more glare and halos at nighttime. Words tend to have shadows around them or even look double.

Its very important to have an eye check up if u notice any of these symptoms in your child. Mild cases of keratoconus can be treated early with eyeglasses to correct vision impairment, or sometimes special contact lenses. Great care and expertise must be used in the fitting of contact lenses for keratoconus.

Frequent check-ups and frequent lens changes may be necessary due to subtle and unpredictable changes in the shape of the cornea. Advanced cases may require procedures like Collagen cross linking, Corneal implants like Intacs or Corneal transplant at a very advanced stage.

An early diagnosis and timely management are the keys to prevent severe loss of vision and to ensure a successful outcome.

DECODING THE BLACK FUNGUS: WITH Dr B. VIDYASHANKAR, Oculoplasty and Orbital Surgeon

Cases of “Mucormycosis” or “Black fungus”, a fatal rare infection are shooting up in patients recovering from Covid-19.
The fungal disease, called mucormycosis, has a 50% mortality rate. It affects patients initially in the nose but the fungus can then spread to the eyes and into the brain, and may often need a major surgery
The rise in black fungus infections, mostly in patients who had severe cases of Covid-19, has been linked to use of steroids in the treatment of the coronavirus, which can acutely compromise the immune system if taken over a prolonged period. The high incidence of diabetes in India has also been blamed
Join us for a live chat with Dr. B. Vidyashankar, Orbital and Oculoplasty Surgeon on Sunday, 30th May 2021 11.00 AM to 12.00 NOON to clear all your doubts.
