6 Steps of Breast Self-Examination 🩷
Early detection can save lives — and it starts with you.
Take a few minutes each month to check for changes and stay aware.
Step 1: Pick Your Day
Check your breasts once a month.
Step 2: Visual Examination in Front of a Mirror
Stand straight with shoulders back and hands on hips.
Look for changes in size, shape, or symmetry.
Check for any swelling, dimpling, or redness.
Now, raise your arms above your head and repeat the observation.
Step 3: Check for Discharge
Gently squeeze to see if there’s any fluid, pain, or discharge (clear, milky, yellow, or bloody).
Report any unusual findings to your doctor.
Step 4: Feel Your Breasts While Standing or Sitting
Lift one arm and use the pads of your three middle fingers from the other hand.
Move your fingers in small circular motions, covering the entire breast — from collarbone to under-breast and from armpit to cleavage.
Many women find it easiest to do this step in the shower.
Step 5: Check Your Armpits
Using the same circular motion, feel the armpit area for any lump or swelling — as breast tissue extends there too.
Step 6: Repeat While Lying Down
Lie on your back with a pillow under your shoulder.
Place one arm behind your head and use your opposite hand to feel your breast in the same circular manner.
This helps flatten the breast tissue and makes it easier to feel any lump.
Remember: Perform this self-exam and consult your doctor if you notice anything unusual.
Your awareness today can make all the difference tomorrow.
