Our Director , Eye Bank Dr. Kavita Rao mentions, India needs about Three Lakh corneas an year, where as we recieve about Thirty Thousand Corneas only. Celebrating Vision!
A 70 year old, one eyed patient from Dharavi entered our hospital holding on to his son. His right eye was already pthisical , and he had no hopes after he lost his vision post cataract surgery in the left eye. At Aditya jyot eye Hospital, we bring back hopes to seemingly blind patients. Dr Kavita Rao our Director Cornea Cataract and Refractive surgery performed a sutureless corneal transplantation procedure called DSEK. Only the deeper layer of the cornea is replaced by a donor cornea. After only 4 days of the procedure, the patient is already seeing much better, and went back today without holding his son’s hand. For us that called for a celebration. This surgery was done at no charge to the patient.
This post is to bring about awareness in this strata of society. Prompt and optimum intervention can definitely salvage vision in the majority of cases.
