Cowrie shell divination refers to a distinct form of divination using cowrie shells that are part of rituals and religious beliefs of several religions. It is most documented in West Africa. It originates from West African derived Afro-American religions, such as Candomblé and Umbanda.

Forms of cowrie-shell divination have been documented in other regions as well such as East Africa, India and in South American countries such as Brazil, Cuba and Puerto Rico.

The practice of this divination was brought to America with the slave trade that took place between the 17th and 19th centuries. The use of cowrie shells originally however is claimed to have come from the Middle East and to have entered Africa some centuries earlier. Cowrie shells were used as currency in Africa during the time of the slave trade. Till date they are frequently used in ornaments and dresses associated with the Afro-American cults. (Wikipedia.org)

Cartomancy is fortune-telling or divination using a deck of playing cards. Forms of cartomancy appeared soon after playing cards were first introduced into Europe in the 14th century. Practitioners of cartomancy are known as cartomancers or card readers.

Cartomancy is one of the oldest forms of fortune-telling. It is similar to tarot card reading. Cartomancy was the most popular form of fortune-telling in the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

In English-speaking countries, a standard deck of Anglo-American bridge/poker playing cards (52 card, 4 suit set) can be used in the cartomancy reading. In France, the 32-card piquet playing-card deck was and still is most used in cartomancy readings, the same way the 52-card deck is also used for this purpose.

The picture on the left is of the French Lenormand 'standard' playing deck. Marie Anne Adelaide Lenormand was a famous cartomancer who read cards for Napoleon’s wife, Josephine. The 36 set of cards that became known as the Lenormand are based on cards that she supposedly used. The cards have symbols that are direct and simple. The Unicorn is a legendary animal from ancient European folklore that resembles a white horse with a large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead. It was first mentioned by the ancient Greeks, it then became the most important imaginary animal of the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
It was commonly described as an extremely wild woodland creature, a symbol of purity and grace, which could only be captured by a virgin. In the encyclopedias its horn was said to have the power to revert poisoned water and to heal sickness. (Wikipedia.com)
In modern day divination and spirituality the Unicorn is seen as a symbol of luck and grace.

The striking, fascinating artwork in this deck was created by Aleister Crowley. The Thoth Tarot deck is regarded as another classic Tarot deck, but some previous knowledge of tarot would help when using this deck. (Aeclectic.net)
Edward Alexander Crowley was an English occultist, mystic, ceremonial magician who was responsible for finding the religious philosophy of Thelema. In his role as the founder of the Thelemite philosophy in the Golden Dawn, he came to see himself as the prophet whose aim was to inform humanity that it was entering the new Aeon of Horus (The time of self realization and self actualization) in the early 20th century. Angels are supreme pirits without bodies, who possess superior intelligence, gigantic strength, and surpassing holiness.
