Episode 3 — Grandma’s Nuskhas vs Science: Neem & Multani Mitti for Acne 🌿

These two ingredients have been used for generations to manage oily skin and breakouts.

And there is some science behind it.

Neem contains compounds like azidaractin, nimbidin and quercetin, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may help calm mild acne.

Multani mitti (Fuller’s earth) works mainly by absorbing excess oil and impurities, which can temporarily reduce shine and clogged pores.

But here’s the catch:
Used too frequently, they can strip the skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and sometimes even more breakouts. Neem can be cause irritant dermatitis if used alone or in a concentrated form.

So while they may help with oil control, they don’t target the main drivers of acne the way medical treatments do.
At the most they can be adjuvants in the form of facewashes or masks in your acne fighting journey not stand alone treatments!

Resurfacing? Yes.
Targeting marks? Yes.
Over-stripping your skin? No.

Powered by salicylic acid + niacinamide in the cleanser and retinol in the night serum — all balanced with the 3 essential ceramides to keep your barrier intact. That’s smart formulation.

Dry brushing isn’t detox. It’s trauma.

❌ No cellulite reduction
❌ No detox benefits
✅ Yes to dryness, irritation, barrier damage & pigmentation

Gentle exfoliation > aggressive scrubbing.
Throw the dry brush + loofah away 🗑️✨

PS: If you have normal–dry skin, normal bathing is exfoliation enough.

Collagen supplements are everywhere — and patients ask me about them daily. Does it work only for skin and hair or are there any other benefits.

True or False — Azelaic Acid Edition 🔬

One ingredient. Many myths.

✔ Acne
✔ Acne pigmentation
✔ Sensitive & rosacea-prone skin
✔ Safe in pregnancy
✔ Helpful in melasma

❌ Does not cause photosensitivity
❌ Does not bleach or depigment normal skin

Can be used day and night when tolerated.
Helpful for mild to moderate acne and post-acne marks —
but not a magic fix for deep acne scars.

Gentle. Versatile. Evidence-based.

Always patch test before using...

Welcome to Episode 2 of Grandma’s Nuskhas vs Science.

Besan and malai have long been used for glow and detanning,
but their effects are temporary, not corrective.

Frequent use of besan can cause irritation, dryness, and even pigmentation.
Malai, while deeply moisturising, is highly comedogenic and can trigger or worsen breakouts.

So here’s the science-backed takeaway:
• Dry, sensitive, eczema-prone skin → skip besan
• Oily, combination, acne-prone skin → skip malai

Use either occasionally, not routinely — and always patch test first.

Grandma wasn’t wrong. 👵🏽
But she didn’t have clinical trials either.👩🏽‍🔬

But now that we do,we know that haldi works — when used the right way.
Welcome to Episode 1 of Grandma’s Nuskhas vs Science 🔬✨ where I Dr Raashi Mehta examine age old ingredients under the lens of evidence based medicine...

The use of haldi is so deeply rooted in our culture that there's a whole wedding ceremony centred around it. Touted for its skin brightening and wound healing properties what is the actual science behind it??

Haldi contains curcumin which gives its antioxidant, antiinflammatory and wound healing powers.

Studies have shown it's benefits on diseases like psoriasis
,vitiligo,acne, infections and wound healing.

But the percentage of curcumin in store bought haldi powder is very low and the pe*******on is poor. Also due to other additives it can irritate the skin and cause staining.

That's why its important to choose the right formulation with a good percentage of curcumin or in which it is combined with other ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin c which potentiates its antioxidant and skin barrier repairing effects.

So skip applying raw haldi on the skin and choose better formulations!!

4 vicious acne cycles — and how to break them 👇
1️⃣ Stress → acne → more stress
Stress hormones increase oil & inflammation, triggering breakouts.
🔹 Break the cycle: stress management, adequate sleep, regular routines & timely acne treatment.
2️⃣ Acne → picking → worse acne & marks
Picking delays healing and increases scarring & pigmentation.
🔹 Break the cycle: cover active pimples with pimple patches to protect, heal & resist the urge to touch.
3️⃣ Oiliness → frequent face washing → more oiliness
Over-washing strips the skin barrier, causing rebound oil and irritation.
🔹 Break the cycle: rinse with water when needed or use gentle, acne-friendly wipes instead of harsh cleansers.
4️⃣ Sun exposure → acne flare (but wrong sunscreen can worsen acne)
UV increases inflammation, but comedogenic sunscreens can clog pores.
🔹 Break the cycle: choose non-comedogenic, gel-based, oil-free sunscreens.
✨ Acne improves when we treat triggers, not just pimples.
Save this for your acne routine & share with someone who needs it.
