Being a COVID survivor was not the end to this brave 51-year-old patient’s medical battle.
The low immunity caused by the COVID 19 infection , along with her Diabetes Mellitus made Mrs. Shaila Sonar, from Dhule, interior Maharashtra, more susceptible to the rare and serious fungal infection, Mucormycosis. Mucorales is the largest and best studied order of zygomycete fungi, which are sometimes called pin molds.
This fungal infection destroys bone and blood vessels and spreads aggressively from the nose to the eyes and to the brain.
In Sonar’s case, the fungal infection was present in her nose, paranasal sinuses, and palate. If left untreated the infection poses severe health risks including blindness and death.
In case of Mrs. Sonar infection was so aggressive that even after four surgeries performed outside Global Hospital, Mumbai continued to worsen. This led to the patient’s eventual Consultation and Surgery along with appropriate anti-fungal therapy under the care of our team of experts, with more than 25 years of experience in treating this deadly disease.
Dr Prof Milind Navalakhe, Consultant ENT Surgeon, Global Hospital, Mumbai operated Mrs Sonar removing half of her palate in the process of clearing the fungal infection. Her eyeball was saved due to timely and precise surgical intervention Following the surgery, she underwent anti-fungal therapy and rehabilitation, under apt care of Dr Vasant Nagvekar, Head - Department of Infectious Disease. Her condition continues to improve as she continues her follow-ups in OPD with our expert doctors at Global Hospital, Mumbai.
The team of doctors as well as other hospital staff played an important role in the treatment and recovery of the patient. We at Global Hospital, Mumbai are happy to have helped provide the necessary treatment to a life-threatening infection.
