[Patient Story] [Kenya · Pancreatic Cancer · NanoKnife]

Two Miracles: A Kenyan Woman Finds a Bloom of Hope Under the Shadow of the “King of Cancers”

A year ago, she was tormented by advanced pancreatic cancer and advised by local doctors to “go home.” Today, she is living independently, full of energy and spirit. This extension of life represents the dedication and perseverance of countless healthcare professionals—and bears witness to the remarkable outcomes that can be achieved when advanced medical technology meets genuine human care.

From Helicobacter pylori to a “Mass”
Maureen, from Kenya, began experiencing abdominal discomfort in February last year. Local doctors initially suspected a Helicobacter pylori infection. However, after a period of anti-infective treatment, her pain did not improve. Sensing something was wrong, she underwent further examinations, and an ultrasound revealed a mass in the pancreas.
As a healthcare professional herself—and a breast cancer survivor—Maureen was acutely sensitive to the word “mass.” She immediately traveled to India for hospitalization. After a series of tests, she was confronted with a suffocating diagnosis: pancreatic adenocarcinoma, often referred to as the “king of cancers.”

Due to the tumor’s unfavorable location and large size, surgeons told her that open surgery was not an option. She was offered two alternatives: NanoKnife ablation or chemotherapy. At the time, Maureen had never even heard of NanoKnife. When she learned that the procedure could take up to eight hours, she firmly refused. “Limited experience, immature technique, long duration, and high risk”—that was her assessment then. Physically weak, she did not dare to undergo such a lengthy procedure and chose chemotherapy instead.

However, after four cycles of chemotherapy, the treatment showed minimal effect while the side effects were devastating. Seeking another evaluation from a gastrointestinal specialist, she was told, “This cancer may not be sensitive to chemotherapy.” She then underwent five sessions of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), but the tumor still failed to shrink. Her pain worsened, analgesics gradually lost effect, and her weight dropped from 70 kg to 54 kg.
“Doctors advised me to go home.”
Those words felt like a final verdict. Even Maureen, who had never wanted to give up, found herself on the brink of despair.

A Lifeline Across the Ocean
Hope emerged from the depths of desperation. Her nephew, who works in medical tourism, learned of her situation and quickly connected with Dr. Anup Aboti at our India consulting clinic of Fuda Cancer Hospital, Guangzhou. After a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Anup Aboti, Prof. Dr. Niu Lizhi and the medical team proposed a new treatment strategy: a combination of NanoKnife ablation, interventional nano particle chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
After learning about Fuda’s extensive experience with NanoKnife technology, Maureen embarked on her journey to China in June this year. By then, her condition was extremely poor: no appetite, little will to live, and in her own words, “I didn’t even look like a human being anymore.”

Arriving late at night at the Fourth Medical Department of Fuda Cancer Hospital, the unfamiliar surroundings, jet lag, and relentless pain left her physically and emotionally exhausted. Yet a small, thoughtful gesture by the nursing staff—preparing a meal for her—instantly warmed her heart in a foreign land.

Examinations revealed that her pancreatic cancer was already at Stage III, with secondary malignant retroperitoneal lymph node involvement, making curative surgery impossible. Dr. Pang Xiaoming explained her condition clearly in plain language, patiently listening to her needs to tailor a more suitable treatment plan.

After multidisciplinary consultation, the team performed NanoKnife ablation of the pancreatic tumor combined with celiac plexus neurolysis. Postoperatively, immunotherapy was administered to control the tumor while alleviating cancer-related pain.

“NanoKnife ablation took less than an hour,” Maureen recalled—starkly different from the eight hours she had once feared. Even during her night of observation in the ICU, the warm companionship of the medical staff gave her a profound sense of security. In the days following surgery, miracles began to unfold: her appetite returned, she could sleep through the night, and her weight gradually increased. She later underwent arterial infusion chemotherapy.

“After returning home, I visited my original gastrointestinal doctor. He was shocked and said I must have received very high-quality treatment to have ‘come back to life,’” she said. Although the tumor had not shrunk dramatically and some marginal activity remained, most of the lesion was necrotic. More importantly, her strength, energy, and quality of life were all steadily improving. In the face of the “king of cancers,” Maureen had won a hard-fought battle.

A Dual Victory of Technology and Humanity
Maureen describes her journey with two “miracles”:
The first miracle was the exceptional medical expertise and humanistic care of the Fuda team—not only the efficiency of NanoKnife technology, but also the doctors’ and nurses’ willingness to listen and communicate with genuine empathy.
The second miracle was the comprehensive improvement of her body after treatment—a life-saving outcome created through the joint efforts of both doctors and patient.
Here, she felt true empathy from the medical staff, mutual support from fellow patients, and meticulous hospital services—from interpretation and transportation to thoughtful facilities such as a shared kitchen. All of this made her feel that she was “not trapped in a cage,” but instead empowered to fight cancer.

Her mindset transformed from resignation to openness. She hopes her experience can encourage other cancer patients:
“Don’t be afraid. There is always a method that suits you. Even in the darkest moments, never give up searching for the possibility of light.”

[Patient Story] [China-Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma-Cryoablation]

A “Time Bomb” in the Kidney—Defused with Cryoablation

An Elderly Patient Caught in a Dilemma: A “Time Bomb” in the Kidney

Mr. Li (pseudonym), nearly 80 years old, lives in Inner Mongolia. In September this year, he began experiencing pain in his right kidney and sought medical attention at a local hospital. The examination results raised serious concerns: hydronephrosis of the right kidney, atrophy of the left kidney, and a 3.9 cm mass detected in the left kidney.
Local doctors recommended immediate removal of the left kidney. However, for Mr. Li—advanced in age and suffering from hypertension and a previous cerebral infarction—traditional surgery carried extremely high risks. His two daughters firmly opposed the suggestion.
“Our father is old and has so many underlying conditions. We really couldn’t bear to put him through major surgery again,” they said.
Yet leaving the tumor untreated felt like carrying a “time bomb.” The entire family was overwhelmed with anxiety.
Traveling Thousands of Miles: Minimally Invasive Technology Brings New Hope
A turning point came during a public health lecture. Professor Niu Lizhi, President of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, happened to be in Ordos, Inner Mongolia, delivering a公益 (public welfare) lecture.
After learning in detail about the minimally invasive ablation techniques he specializes in—such as cryoablation and NanoKnife—the daughters saw a glimmer of hope. They brought their father’s medical reports to consult him in person.
“President Niu told us that my father was indeed not suitable for surgical resection, and that postoperative complications would also be a major challenge. He recommended minimally invasive treatment with less trauma,” one daughter recalled.
Although Mr. Li was initially reluctant to travel far, his daughters patiently persuaded him. In the end, they managed to “coax” him onto the journey south to Guangzhou in search of treatment.

Thorough Evaluation Reveals an Unexpected Blood Disorder
After admission to the First Medical Department of Fuda Hospital, the attending physician, Dr. Hong Guiyong, noticed something unusual while reviewing the test results: markedly elevated white blood cell and platelet counts, accompanied by splenomegaly.
“This is not just a kidney problem. The abnormal blood counts suggest a possible hematologic disorder,” Dr. Hong explained to the family.
He promptly arranged a bone marrow biopsy and genetic testing. The results confirmed his suspicion—Mr. Li was also diagnosed with chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm, a clonal disorder of hematopoietic stem cells. This condition can lead to abnormal overproduction of blood cells, increased blood viscosity, sluggish blood flow, and a high risk of thrombosis, potentially resulting in fatal events such as cerebral infarction, myocardial infarction, or cerebral hemorrhage.
This comprehensive evaluation not only confirmed the left kidney tumor as clear cell renal cell carcinoma, but also uncovered a hidden, potentially life-threatening condition, providing a crucial basis for an integrated treatment strategy.
Personalized Treatment Brings Smiles Back to the Family
Faced with the complex coexistence of a solid tumor and a hematologic disease, a multidisciplinary medical team concluded that tumor reduction was clearly indicated, but traditional surgery posed excessive risk.
Taking into account the family’s strong wishes and Mr. Li’s physical condition, the team ultimately devised a personalized treatment plan:

cryoablation followed by targeted therapy.
Cryoablation destroys tumor cells by freezing them at ultra-low temperatures. With minimal trauma and rapid recovery, it is especially suitable for elderly patients with multiple comorbidities.
Rapid Recovery Exceeds Expectations
“We did the cryoablation on November 18, he was transferred from the ICU to a general ward on the 19th, and after the urinary catheter was removed on the 20th, he was already wandering around like a little kid, happily chatting with other patients,” Mr. Li’s daughter told us with a smile.
She added that her father’s overall condition was excellent, with no significant pain, and that his appetite and sleep were barely affected. The family was extremely satisfied with the outcome.
When Doctors and Patients Work Together, a Hospital Can Feel Like Home
“My father can be a bit short-tempered, but this time he was surprisingly ‘well-behaved,’” his daughter joked.
During nearly half a month of hospitalization far from home, Mr. Li indeed showed rare patience. Though he occasionally acted like a grumpy old child, he remained cooperative throughout the treatment, thanks to the attentive care of the medical staff and the constant companionship of his daughters.
“The doctors and nurses were incredibly kind and patient. The hospital didn’t feel cold at all—it felt more like a home,” his daughter said emotionally. “If all hospitals were like this, perhaps fewer people would be so afraid of getting sick or being hospitalized.”
This long journey for medical care not only successfully resolved the kidney tumor crisis, but also led to the timely detection and management of a blood disorder. More importantly, it gave the family a profoundly different medical experience—one where advanced technology and human compassion go hand in hand, turning treatment into a journey filled with warmth.

[Fuda News] [International Conference – NanoKnife]

China’s Voice on the Global Stage: President Niu Lizhi Shares NanoKnife Achievements, Sparking Active Q&A

At the recent ANGIODYNAMICS INTERNATIONAL LIFE SYMPOSIUM, Dr. Niu Lizhi, President of Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital, traveled to Europe to present to leading experts worldwide the current status of NanoKnife ablation technology in China, as well as China’s clinical experience and outcomes using NanoKnife combined with chemotherapy in treating hilar cholangiocarcinoma. This breakthrough therapy drew strong interest from international participants, prompting an enthusiastic Q&A session.

Hilar cholangiocarcinoma is notoriously difficult to treat due to its complex anatomical location. Tumors often invade major vascular structures, and most patients lose the opportunity for curative surgery by the time of diagnosis. For those with advanced, unresectable disease, traditional treatment options remain limited, and a breakthrough therapy is urgently needed. NanoKnife ablation has emerged as one such breakthrough in addressing this global clinical challenge.

The NanoKnife, also known as Irreversible Electroporation (IRE), is a non-thermal tumor ablation technique. It delivers microsecond high-voltage electrical pulses that create nanoscale pores in cancer cell membranes, inducing apoptosis while preserving nearby vital structures such as blood vessels, nerves, and bile ducts. This makes it particularly suitable for tumors located in anatomically complex regions such as the hepatic hilum, gallbladder and bile ducts, and pancreas.
As one of the earliest hospitals in China to adopt NanoKnife technology, Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital has successfully performed thousands of NanoKnife ablation procedures, ranking among the world’s leading centers. The hospital has also developed a comprehensive treatment system and clinical pathway, enabling the Chinese team to accumulate extensive experience and offer new hope to patients with unresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma. During the conference, Dr. Niu presented clinical data demonstrating outcomes significantly superior to traditional monotherapies, attracting wide attention from attendees.

NanoKnife is not a stand-alone treatment but a key component of a multidisciplinary approach. The integration of local ablation and systemic therapy is expected to become an important trend in the future management of hilar cholangiocarcinoma. With continuous advancements in China’s medical technology and deepening international collaboration, more innovative Chinese treatment approaches are stepping onto the global stage. Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital will continue to contribute China’s wisdom and strength to the worldwide fight against cancer.

[Breaking News] [Indonesia – Sudden Carotid Artery Rupture Caused by Right Cervical Spindle Cell Sarcoma]

1,000 ml of Blood Loss, Three Life-Saving Relays, and an 18-Hour Extreme Rescue

At 11 p.m., the lights at Guangzhou Fuda Cancer Hospital were still blazing. A desperate race against death was unfolding—an Indonesian patient suffered a sudden massive hemorrhage after a spindle cell sarcoma in the right neck invaded the carotid artery and ruptured. In an instant, blood spurted out violently. The patient lost nearly 1,000 ml of blood.
A silent life alarm was triggered. In the critical moment, Dr. Jia Xintong and the on-duty nurses became the first line of defense. Without hesitation, they rushed forward and pressed firmly on the bleeding site with their bare hands. That single press lasted one full hour. Every second was a countdown to life; every second was held up by unwavering determination and a sense of sacred duty.

Life-saving efforts could not wait. Relevant departments mobilized instantly and cooperated with precision. Interventional specialist Director Yang Qingfeng and Dr. Qiu Ningning rushed to the hospital from home in the middle of the night to begin the first lifesaving relay—performing emergency embolization to stop the bleeding. In the stillness of the early morning, their expertise and persistence guarded the first glimmer of hope.
The lights in the blood bank also stayed on through the night. Thanks to the blood reserves from the hospital’s fourth voluntary staff donation drive this year, the clinical supply remained secure.
When a specific blood type ran critically low, a driver from the service department volunteered immediately:
“I know the route well. I’ll take it!”
Gripping the steering wheel, he raced through the dark city to deliver the urgently needed blood to the operating floor at top speed. This invisible lifeline was reinforced by every ordinary person making extraordinary efforts.

Meanwhile, Dr. Liu Zhengping and the team in Indonesia stayed awake with their phones in hand, anxiously following the situation in Guangzhou. Cross-border updates, translated in real time, connected the care and expertise of both countries.
After an urgent multidisciplinary evaluation led by President Niu Lizhi, Prof. Zeng Zongyuan, Director Xu Jiongyuan, and external experts, the team decided to implant a covered stent. Like tightly interlocking gears, all departments activated emergency protocols with flawless coordination, opening a seamless green channel for the patient.

Yet at the moment hope appeared, a slight jolt during bed transfer triggered another catastrophic hemorrhage. In the split second between life and death, Dr. Wang Jie Fu pressed down on the wound with the grip of an iron clamp.
In a storm of gushing blood, he remained motionless—a human hemostatic forceps—buying the surgical team invaluable time. After more than three hours of continuous manual compression, the surgery succeeded, and the covered stent was finally implanted.

An 18-Hour Battle Across Two Countries
When the life-threatening crisis was finally resolved, hearts across Guangzhou and Indonesia could at last relax. Behind this 18-hour rescue was the seamless coordination of the Interventional Department, ICU, Anesthesia Department, Procurement, and the translation team—an inspiring portrait of cross-department unity and courage.
And this was not an isolated case. Just last month, the same team carried out another nerve-wracking rescue: An Indonesian patient with an oral tumor suffered sudden massive bleeding, and all conventional hemostatic measures failed. In the moment of crisis, Dr. Wang Jie Fu once again stepped forward, manually pressing the bleeding point for more than two hours, creating a critical window for the interventional and anesthesia teams. After 45 minutes of coordinated effort, they successfully embolized the vessel and claimed another victory.

On This Battlefield Without Smoke and beneath the white coats lie not only superb medical skills, but shields of flesh and blood that protect life. Not only duty, but compassion—the resolve to guard life with life.
