Yash Charitable Trust

Yash Charitable Trust YCT was established in 2014 with the mission to enhance the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities.

Over the last 3 years, we have strived to create inclusive community-based activities for our team of 8 members which will assist them in becoming more responsible, productive members of their community. We currently run a daily lunch delivery service (Monday to Saturday) in our area where our team is an integral part of the preparation and distribution of all the meals. We also have weekly cooking, computer, music and dance classes where our team interacts with non-disabled teachers and volunteers.

Our Story

Yash Charitable Trust (YCT) was established in 2014 with the mission of enhancing the qualityof life for adults with developmental disabilities such as autism, Downsʼ Syndrome, cerebralpalsy and other intellectual disabilities. This includes livelihood, community participation and relationships, building a support network of friends and colleagues and living options. We use a person-centred framework. These individuals are our beneficiaries.

Besides earning a small paycheck they are active and contributing members of the society , unlike sheltered workshops where differently-abled adults are only kept occupied with very little opportunity for active community participation. Our vision is that persons with developmental disabilities become responsible, contributing members and are able to live and work in the community with dignity and self-respect. We attempt to address the problem of livelihood and quality of life primarily by training and offering supported employment opportunities.

In 2015, we launched our first supported employment initiative, Arpan Dabba Service. We began with 5 adults and have grown to 19 individuals working with us on a full and part-time basis. After three years of successfully running the dabba service, we had to think of other ways to accommodate our growing team. Following which, in August 2018, we launched our second employment initiative - Cafe Arpan, where our team members prepare and serve a range of beverages, snacks and desserts. Since opening, we have received a flood of positive feedback and attention and this we believe has propelled us into the job provider market for the disabled population of Mumbai.

Apart from supported employment, we take our advocacy and education in the community very seriously. As extensions of our work, we have started a music group called Tarang; and the Adult Support Kendra or ASK via which workshops, seminars and counselling sessions are provided to families with disabilities. Our giving back to the community is our collaboration with the Robin Hood Army. Through this partnership, every week we provide 25 meal packets to street children.
