WHILE RESEARCH IS GOING ON WE ARE ALREADY TREATING THIS WAY....

"Shock and kill" is a strategy being explored in HIV research as a way to eradicate the virus from the body. HIV integrates its genetic material into the host’s DNA, forming latent reservoirs in various cells, particularly in CD4+ T cells, where the virus remains dormant for long periods. These latent reservoirs are one of the major barriers to curing HIV, as the virus can stay hidden, undetected by the immune system, and unaffected by antiretroviral therapy (ART).

The "shock" part of the treatment involves using certain drugs or compounds that "shock" the latent HIV out of its dormant state, making the virus active again. The idea is to reactivate the virus from its latent reservoir, bringing it to the surface where it can be targeted by the immune system or other therapies. Once the virus is "shocked" into activity, the "kill" part of the treatment seeks to eliminate it using a combination of immune responses, potentially boosted by other treatments like broadly neutralizing antibodies or gene-editing tools like CRISPR.
