At the time of its founding in 1931 it was one of the first good non-military hospitals in the region. It has been run by the Emmanuel Hospital Association, an indigenous Christian health and development agency, since 1981, and continues to provide affordable (or free) medical care to the people of Landour and the surrounding hills. The hospital serves in the name and Spirit of Jesus Christ the deprived village communities living in the mountains of Mussoorie, Dehradun District and Jaunpur Block, Tehri Garhwal. The hill people are very poor and live at a subsistence level with a high infant mortality and maternal mortality rates, compounded by malnutrition and tuberculosis. The hospital offers acute obstetrics and surgical care supplemented with orthopedic and trauma care. The hospital underwent many changes in 2007. The major building renovation was completed by a private Indian donor, and the hospital bears a brand new look. The “new” building was dedicated to the service of God on September 1, 2007. Regarding community development work, the hospital has a program Landour Community Health and Development Program. This program currently has 2 projects. One Village Health and Sanitation Committee Empowerment Project (under National Rural Health Mission scheme) and Samvedna Project, a Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) project for empowerment and inclusion of people with disability (PWDs). There are opportunities for individuals, institutions and NGOs to partner with the hospital or the projects in terms of volunteering, internships, teaching, training and financial or resource support.
