This term is used to describe a mood state in which a person is more cheerful and happy than they normally are. It is mostly associated with feeling more confident and enjoying even the small things.

The thing to note here is that each persons normal may be different, just because someone is more cheerful than you are doesn't mean they are elevated. We need to know the individual’s baseline mood before we can assess whether they are elevated.

Someone who always looks at things in a little bad light starts to even be slightly happier could mean that they are elevated, but in someone who is always happy most of the time, this becomes very difficult to figure out.

Elevated mood is needed for us to accomplish our goals and push us to be motivated and accomplished in life. But, an elevated mood makes us expend a lot of energy and can become exhausting when present for a long time.

Some mood fluctuations are required in life to help maintain balance.

Hence, elevated mood becomes pathological when:

1. It is inappropriate to the situation and environment

2. It is persistent for a longer time than it should

3. It causes the individual harm - physically, in relationships, at work/in studies, financially, etc.

I realize that I may have used some terms here which might need some explanation and I plan to do that in the future posts.

Happiness…. Isn’t that what we all want in our life?

But, what is happiness? Is there a formula for it? Can too much happiness be bad? Lets see……

Happiness is a positive emotion. It can be used to describe both an affective response or a long standing mood.

It encompasses a vast range of feelings from just being content with what is happening to feeling joyous about something.

It is experienced when you subjectively feel well and satisfied. Which means that what causes happiness, its experience, expression and how long it endures is different for different people.

This is why there is no fixed formula to be happy, but you are more likely to be happy if you are healthy and doing something that you love and that provides you with a sense of satisfaction.

Regular physical exercise, a healthy diet, a good sleep schedule, a job/education that you like, good communication within a family are among some of the things that can help you achieve happiness.

Always remember that you are the source of your happiness.

You may feel that others are the cause of your unhappiness, but you have the power to turn that around and find happiness within you.

I am going to answer the question of too much happiness in my next post….. So stay connected…….

I realize that I may have used some terms here which might need some explanation and I plan to do that in the future posts.

Anger is another one of those emotions that has been passed down to us by evolution and is required in some situations for survival.

This does not change the fact that it is a negative emotion and can be hurtful the person themselves and others around.

Anger is mainly of 3 types:

1. Passive anger (not expressed vocally or physically, but kept inside and comes out as passive behaviors)

2. Aggressive anger (Expressed immediately in a vocal and sometimes even physical manner)

3. Assertive anger (Healthiest way to express anger if done right. Very thin line separating it from aggressive anger. Anger when expressed in a composed manner)

Anger can lead a person to do things which they would regret later.

It is an intense affective response that clouds the person's judgement and other cognitive abilities leading to decisions and actions that may not be right.

Learning to channel the anger in a right way, and in the right direction is as important as learning to control it.

Recognising that you are getting angry and just pausing for a few moments to think if you are just saying things out of anger or if you actually mean them can save you and your loved ones from a world of pain.

Difficulty in controlling anger should be one of the most common things a person should consult a MHP for, but unfortunately it is the one emotion we defend as normal irrespective of how bad it gets.

I realize that I may have used some terms here which might need some explanation and I plan to do that in the future posts.
