Recent reports say that one woman is r***d every 15 minutes in the country where we call ourselves as daughters of India. I would replace the word “woman” with a female because the age seems to range from 3 months old baby girl to 85-year-old woman (Ref 1 and 2). So every time there is such an incident like a recent one (dhairya – Priya Reddy, I don’t know why we give names after we have lost them just like how we gave Nirbhaya to Jyoti), there is always a hula bulla saying what’s right and what’s wrong in the world and how women should be safe. Yes, nobody talks about how women should be respected and protected but we bloody talk about how women should follow certain things from installing apps to calling police or the emergency number which doesn’t reach the right destination. As per the discussion I have been incessantly hearing since Friday about how women should be wary of the surroundings when they travel to work and be cautious about strangers or stalkers, yes everything is fine I agree on all that aspect, but have you heard about Vijaya Reddy? If not pls go-to reference 3. The next thing, we women will start to hear is why should women go to work? If you cant be safe in your own office with personal people around then what can you say?? (she was an MRO for god sake! not even a laborer working in construction site – no offense meant for the ladies there, but they are more open and vulnerable and work on hunches to protect themselves if they can).
So let’s decide what is safe after considering the cases quoted, yes we are supposed to be outraged by what happened to Priya Reddy, its gruesome and horrid. But let’s also decide what we call as safety? Let’s also talk about inside the walls and outside the walls as well? Women inside the walls aren’t safe either (Reference 4 5 & 6 many more).
How do you expect your daughter, sister, wife, mother or even granddaughter to feel safe? Safety is a feeling which is intangible. Hence, walls or no walls don’t matter. Unless men understand how to respect a woman in whatever the stage she is from a newborn to old age, every woman will feel vulnerable and afraid. So how do we make men understand this? that’s like a billion-dollar question??
