The dreaded Mucormycosis !!!!! aka BLACK FUNGUS!!!

This was a case treated by us back in 2016 with uncontrolled and Rhinocerebral mucormycosis of right side midface with pathological fracture .

I am posting this now to inform the public that the so called BLACK FUNGUS is not a new diseases specific to ongoing COVID 19 pandemic !!!!

This deadly fungal infection can occur to anyone with low immunity / or is immunocompromised ; uncontrolled diabetes , renal transplant patients , long term steroid use , HIV or AIDS ,drug abuser’s and now a days post recovery phase of serious covid 19 infection are specially vulnerable .

These fungi (Rhizopus species and Mucor species) aren’t harmful to most people and are found in soil and air naturally . However, for people who have weakened immune systems, breathing in mucormycete spores can cause an infection in the lungs or sinuses which can spread to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of rhinocerebral Mucormycosis
* One-sided facial swelling
* Headache
* Nasal or sinus congestion
* Black lesions on nasal bridge or upper inside of mouth that quickly become more severe
* Fever

The overall mortality rate is approximately 50%, although early identification and treatment can lead to better outcomes.

Please visit your Physician , Maxillofacial surgeon or ENT surgeon at the first sign of this disorder .

Radiation caries !!! I feel it’s every or ‘s responsibility to inform and warn patients regarding this troublesome complication of treatment by head and neck . Patients are prone to multiple following radiation exposure to due to or dry mouth by damage to salivary glands . This is a preventable complication of . Every health care worker who works with cancer victims have a moral responsibility to make quality of life better for the Patient and not just treat the disease . Simple advice of regular visits , regular sips of water , maintainace , saliva substitutes and most importantly patient education can help avoid this unnecessary misery for the victim .

13th February is celebrated as the International Oral and Maxillofacial Day.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch of surgery to correct a wide spectrum of diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region.

It is a recognized international surgical specialty and it is one of the nine specialties of dentistry .

Fully-customized lingual appliances:
For the first time in Mysore we have successfully initiated a case of CAD/CAM designed Fully-customized lingual orthodontics Though has been around for over 30 years, it is perhaps only over the past decade or so that lingual therapy has entered into the mainstream and become a viable treatment option. Problems with traditional lingual orthodontics as been to name a few 1) Difficulties in pronunciations of some words 2). Disturbance in tongue function leading to ulcers on tongue 3) Disturbance in bite leading to constant breakages dislodgement of appliance. CUSTOMISED BRACES ARE SPECIAL As they elevate all this common problems ,and it was noted that the symptoms were significantly reduced or absent on our patient immediately after bonding . And they were truly invincible !!! thank you and for the appliance and our skilled orthodontist for treatment planning and ex*****on of the proposed treatment 🙏

Here I am demonstrating a unique technique of using a Foleys urine catheter in stabilising a depressed zygomatic / cheek bone fracture . This techniques seldom used by surgeons though it’s been well documented J Maxillofac Oral Surg. 2010 Dec; 9(4): 407–409.
