The very first time I was mesmerized by poetry was as a 6–7 year old, when I came across the verse “Karatal Kamala Kamala Dala Nayana.”

What struck me most was its brilliance — a complete poem composed without using আ-কাৰ or ই-কাৰ. That creative beauty fascinated my young mind and inspired me to start writing poems and articles of my own.

On the tithi of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva today, I bow to his timeless genius — a saint, poet, reformer, and cultural visionary whose words continue to ignite minds across centuries.

"কৰতল কমল কমল দল নয়ন ।
ভবদব দহন গহন বন শয়ন ॥
নপৰ নপৰ পৰ সতৰত গময় ।
সভয় মভয় ভয় মমহৰ সততয় ॥

As a Nagaon resident, though not originally from here, I was intrigued by 'Daccapatty', which seemed off to me.Though 'Dacca' might be linked to Dhakeshwari Temple's origins, 'Daccapatty' in Nagaon still felt disconnected from local heritage. Thankfully, it's been thoughtfully renamed Rupkonwar Chowk, paying tribute to Jyotiprasad Agarwala's cultural legacy that profoundly shaped Assam's identity, echoing local pride and heritage.

🌸 Boosting Breast Milk Naturally: Evidence-Based Galactagogues 🌿

✅ What Are Galactagogues?

Galactagogues are specific foods and herbs traditionally used to support breast milk production. They are adjuncts — not substitutes — for effective breastfeeding practices.

Optimal milk supply relies primarily on proper latch, frequent feeding, maternal rest, hydration, and supportive caregiving.

---

🍲 Recommended Galactagogues for Lactating Mothers

1️⃣ Hydration is Fundamental 🥛💦💧

Aim for 2.5–3 liters of fluids daily.

Options: coconut water, warm soups, ajwain-jeera infused water.

Adequate hydration supports milk flow and maternal recovery.

2️⃣ Lauki (Bottle Gourd) 🥒

High water content, easy on digestion.

Ideal in sabzi, soups, or halwa.

3️⃣ Masoor Dal (Red Lentils)🍲

Excellent source of protein and iron.

Promotes postpartum recovery and supports lactation.

4️⃣ Methi (Fenugreek Seeds)

Traditionally used; contains phytoestrogens that may aid milk supply.

Recommended: 1 teaspoon soaked overnight; excessive intake may cause digestive discomfort.

5️⃣ Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus)

Classical Ayurvedic galactagogue.

Supports hormonal balance and lactation.

Can be consumed as churna/granules with warm milk.

6️⃣ Kalonji (Black Seed)

Can be taken as chutney.

Antioxidant, immunity-boosting properties; evidence for lactation limited, so use sparingly.

7️⃣ Dill Leaves (Suva)

Traditionally believed to enhance milk flow and ease digestion.

Add fresh to dals, curries, or soups.

8️⃣ Sesame Seeds (Til)

Rich in calcium and healthy fats.

Roasted til powder can be mixed into porridges or laddoos or even chutney.

💡 Key Principles for Optimal Milk Supply

✔️ Frequent & Effective Breastfeeding: Ensures proper stimulation of milk production.
✔️ Skin-to-Skin Contact: Regulates baby’s feeding reflexes and enhances bonding.
✔️ Adequate Rest & Nutrition: Reduces maternal stress and supports hormonal balance.
✔️ Family & Social Support: Empowers mothers for sustained breastfeeding success.

🔎 Important Note: Galactagogues can support lactation, but they cannot replace correct breastfeeding technique, timely feeds, and professional guidance if concerns arise.

📌 For personalized breastfeeding and dietary support, consult your pediatrician, gynecologist, or a certified lactation consultant.

🌿 Colostrum & The Early Days of Breastfeeding: What Every Mother & Family Should Know

🤱 Colostrum: Nature’s First Vaccine

Colostrum is the thick, yellowish milk your breasts produce in the first 2–3 days after birth.

It is small in quantity but perfectly designed for your newborn’s tiny stomach (just 5–7 ml per feed!).

Rich in antibodies, it protects your baby from infections and helps build lifelong immunity.

It also helps clear your baby’s first stool (meconium) and prevents jaundice.

🫣 Why the Panic About “Less Milk”?

Many mothers and families worry the milk is “too little” in the first 48 hours.

But remember: babies are born with extra fluid stores and only need tiny amounts initially.

Formula top-ups are usually unnecessary unless medically indicated.

✅ Signs Your Baby is Feeding Well in the First Days:

1–2 wet nappies per day in the first 24–48 hours, increasing to 4–6 after day 4.

At least 1–2 black-green stools (meconium) each day, changing to yellow by day 3–5.

Baby is mostly sleepy, waking up to feed every 1.5–3 hours.

Baby’s mouth is moist, and they look satisfied after feeds.

🌸 Day 3: The Milk “Coming In” & Engorgement

Around the third day, your milk supply increases significantly.

This can cause breast engorgement — breasts may feel heavy, warm, and tight.

If baby isn’t latching or feeding effectively, milk can accumulate, leading to pain, fever, or mastitis.

🩺 What Mothers Should Do:
✔️ Feed frequently (every 2–3 hours) and on demand.
✔️ Ensure a good latch; baby’s mouth should cover most of the ar**la, not just the ni**le.
✔️ Massage breasts gently before and during feeds.
✔️ Use cold compresses after feeding for engorgement relief if needed.
✔️ Seek medical or lactation help if you have fever, redness, or severe pain.

❤️ A Note for Families & In-Laws:
It is normal for milk volume to be low in the first two days — this is how nature designed it. Support the mother emotionally and avoid forcing formula unless prescribed by a doctor. Remember: patience and proper feeding now set the foundation for healthy breastfeeding in the coming months.

Comfort for Mama, Nutrition for Baby: Perfect Feeding Posture

🌿 World Breastfeeding Week 2025
Theme: Prioritise Breastfeeding — Create Sustainable Support Systems

🤱 Breastfeeding isn’t only about milk — it’s about comfort, confidence, and care.

As a doctor and a new mother, I have seen firsthand how improper posture while breastfeeding can lead to chronic pain — especially in the lower back, neck, and shoulders.

Many mothers unknowingly hunch over their babies, straining their spine for long feeding sessions. Over time, this can lead to:
🔸 Persistent backaches
🔸 Shoulder and neck stiffness
🔸 Nerve compression and tingling
🔸 Fatigue and frustration

💡 Remember this simple rule:
Bring the baby to the breast, not your breast to the baby.

Here are 5 easy ways to create a comfortable and sustainable breastfeeding posture:

✅ Use pillows and supports – A firm pillow under the baby helps lift them to breast level, reducing forward bending. Special nursing pillows can be very helpful.

✅ Sit upright with back support – Choose a supportive chair with armrests or sit cross-legged on your bed with cushions behind your back.

✅ Relax your shoulders – Keep them away from your ears. Take a few deep breaths to release tension before latching the baby.

✅ Align baby tummy-to-tummy – Whether it’s cradle hold, cross-cradle, football hold, or side-lying, keep the baby’s whole body facing you, nose to ni**le.

✅ Try laid-back positions – If you’re struggling with latch or back pain, semi-reclined feeding can be more natural and restful.

🌸 The right posture does more than protect your back:
✨ Promotes a deeper latch
✨ Reduces ni**le pain
✨ Improves milk transfer
✨ Makes long feeds less tiring

🙌 Supporting breastfeeding means supporting mothers physically and emotionally.

If you are a partner or family member, please help mothers set up a comfortable feeding space:
✔️ A supportive chair or bed
✔️ Extra pillows
✔️ A glass of water within reach
✔️ A relaxed, calm environment

Let’s build an environment where mothers feel safe, respected, and supported to feed their babies — without sacrificing their own health.

🍼 World Breastfeeding Week 2025 ___________________________________
Theme: Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create Sustainable Support Systems

As a doctor and now, as a new mother, I’ve stood on both sides of this journey — advising others, and now walking the path myself.

Let me tell you honestly — breastfeeding is not always easy. It’s exhausting, messy, emotional. You’re healing, you’re sleep-deprived, your hormones are unpredictable, and yet you’re expected to feed and bond and smile through it all.

But — and it’s a big but — there’s no shortcut to breastfeeding. Unless there’s a medical reason, exclusive breastfeeding remains one of the most powerful, cost-effective, and sustainable gifts we can give to our babies.

✅ It builds a baby's immunity like no supplement can.
✅ Protects against infections, allergies, obesity, and chronic diseases.
✅ Promotes emotional bonding and brain development.
✅ Reduces the risk of postpartum depression in mothers.
✅ Naturally spaces children and helps uterus contract post-delivery.
✅ Saves families thousands — no formula, no bottles, no prep.

🌿 From an Ayurvedic perspective, breast milk (stanya) is considered the essence of nourishment (rasa dhatu). It's not just food — it's medicine, emotion, and energy.

But let’s not just talk science — let’s talk support.
Breastfeeding mothers need:

✨ Understanding partners and families.
✨ Flexible workspaces and maternity benefits.
✨ Emotional support — not judgment.
✨ Practical help — healthy meals, rest, and someone to hold the baby while she showers.

🤱 Let us shift from just saying “Breastfeeding is the best” to actually making it possible for every mother. Let's prioritise breastfeeding by creating real, sustainable, and empathetic support systems.

To all new mothers out there — you’re doing something powerful.
And to everyone else — your kindness, patience, and small acts of help can make breastfeeding possible for someone.

With love and solidarity,
