We are often very good at taking care of other things in life like work or family besides ourselves. But what we forget in the process is that if we don't take care of ourselves first, we won't be able to take good care of anyone or anything else either. Self care can look different for different people and its like a wooden puzzle that can be arranged in various ways for the right answers. Few tips for good self care:
1. Play and rejuvenate - In the humdrum of life and work we forget to do things just for the shear joy they bring us. Remember as kids how we would love free play. Finding some time in our busy days, even a small 15 mins window, for doing something that gives us pleasure can make one feel rejuvenated. It could be a hobby, a game, a book, a sport, a creative pursuit or just doing nothing and enjoying quiet time. Do whatever works for you.
2. Pamper and recharge - Pamper yourself by doing things that overall help you recharge. A good 8 hours sleep, a healthy diet with moderate indulgences, limited screen use, a good skincare routine, maintaining oral hygiene, getting massages once in a while, rewarding yourself for your achievements, celebrating the person you are, keeping yourself fit and active, spending time with your favourite people, are all forms of pampering your body and mind. They can recharge you and improve your overall efficiency.
3. Travel and restore - Sometimes you need to get away from your routines to restore your balance. Travelling even for short periods can help you get a new perspective, have newer experiences, break the monotony of everyday life and broaden your horizons. The anticipation and excitement of an upcoming travel marked in your calenders at regular intervals with different groups, like families, friends, solo travel and even work travel, can help tide over difficult days.
Try to incorporate one or more aspects from each of these in your lives for a rejuvenated, recharged and restored self. And in case things still don't seem right, don't forget to meet your friendly neighbourhood mental health professional.
