We are often very good at taking care of other things in life like work or family besides ourselves. But what we forget in the process is that if we don't take care of ourselves first, we won't be able to take good care of anyone or anything else either. Self care can look different for different people and its like a wooden puzzle that can be arranged in various ways for the right answers. Few tips for good self care:

1. Play and rejuvenate - In the humdrum of life and work we forget to do things just for the shear joy they bring us. Remember as kids how we would love free play. Finding some time in our busy days, even a small 15 mins window, for doing something that gives us pleasure can make one feel rejuvenated. It could be a hobby, a game, a book, a sport, a creative pursuit or just doing nothing and enjoying quiet time. Do whatever works for you.

2. Pamper and recharge - Pamper yourself by doing things that overall help you recharge. A good 8 hours sleep, a healthy diet with moderate indulgences, limited screen use, a good skincare routine, maintaining oral hygiene, getting massages once in a while, rewarding yourself for your achievements, celebrating the person you are, keeping yourself fit and active, spending time with your favourite people, are all forms of pampering your body and mind. They can recharge you and improve your overall efficiency.

3. Travel and restore - Sometimes you need to get away from your routines to restore your balance. Travelling even for short periods can help you get a new perspective, have newer experiences, break the monotony of everyday life and broaden your horizons. The anticipation and excitement of an upcoming travel marked in your calenders at regular intervals with different groups, like families, friends, solo travel and even work travel, can help tide over difficult days.

Try to incorporate one or more aspects from each of these in your lives for a rejuvenated, recharged and restored self. And in case things still don't seem right, don't forget to meet your friendly neighbourhood mental health professional.

This week I have been a bit behind my schedule of posting on Saturdays. And that's because I was busy learning. While we all complete our formal education in the 20s, learning should never stop. This week I got to be a part of the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Private Psychiatry organized at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. It was a stimulating academic feast along with a lovely reconnection with colleagues across the country. Will be eternally grateful for the heartwarming gesture by the organizers of dedicating a hall honouring dad's name. Updated myself with latest in the field along with getting tips on how to make your home a sanctum of peace and calm by
Whether it's in your own field or a completely new thing, being a student for life helps broaden our horizons and gives us new experiences. It helps build new connections in the brain and strengthen the neuronal network. Research has suggested that this might help delay or prevent the onset of dementia. So what's stopping you?

All of us recently celebrated Children's day and it reminded me that we need to wish a healthy childhood for our kids too. Not just physically but mentally as well. Here are a few tips for the general wellness of our young ones.

1. Routines and boundaries - Kids mental and physical development is dependent on consistent routines and healthy boundaries. It is about giving them a safe space to explore and express as well as to learn emotional regulation and self soothing.

2. Time and attention - The most important gifts we can share with our children are our undivided attention and time while we are mindfully present with them, even if it is for 10-15 mins each day. If u have more than one child, try to find one on one time, at least 5 mins to spend with each child and talk about anything. It will make all the difference. Be approachable.

3. Secrets and surprises - Teaching them the difference between secrets and surprises, can be an important safety tool. A secret is something that you worry about or are ashamed of or cannot shre with your primary caregivers. Children should be encouraged never to hide secrets from parents. But surprises are for something good, exciting, that you will eventually share with everyone.

4. Act and lead- Children are extremely good mimics. They learn best by observing our behaviours and reactions for everything and anything. How do you face struggles, how do you celebrate victories, how do you treat others, how do you use your phones, how do you socialize, how do you resolve conflicts. So act they way you want them to act and lead by example.

Dont hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional of you see changes in kids behaviours, academics or routines that seem out of ordinary. Remember, children can also suffer from mental illness, which can be treated successfully.

"Gaav Tithe Manasopchar"
Where there is a village, there will be treatment for mental health.
This is a real life example of how one man's idea can trigger a revolution. Way back in 2018-19, , a renowned Psychiatrist from Aurangabad, shared an idea of spreading awareness about common mental health issues at the grassroot level by mental health professionals wherever they were. It was a simple idea of talking about the same topic, at the same time, across the state, sharing the same content. His thought was making it akin to the pulse polio drive where everyone across the state are protected at once. At the inception it included 33 Psychiatrists across various cities of maharashtra (was fortunate to be part of it), over the past 9 drives our numbers have reached more than 500 Psychiatrists from across the country. We have covered topics like school mental health, Schizophrenia, Depression, old age mental health, Women’s mental health, common addictions, exam anxiety, etc.
The work done by all of us was recently shared in the form of a marathi book released at the Annual Conference of the Western Zonal Branch of the Indian Psychiatry Society at Mumbai. It covers stories, experiences and simple take home messages so that our awareness initiative could reach a wider audience.
Grateful to be able to collaborate, contribute and connect with such passionate professionals.

Saturday Sharing...

The theme for this year's mental health week (celebrated each year in the first week of october) was Mental Health at Workplace. Whatever we do, whereever we are, we do not work alone. Our success is a team effort and for a healthy organization, it's important to take care of our team members. Big MNCs and corporates have dedicated departments to provide these services. But how to achieve that in smaller setups. Here are a few tips.

1. *Recognition and respect* - All good employees at any level want and deserve respect and recognition for the work done. We are usually very generous with our criticism but not so much with our praise. A simple warm greeting, a thank you, an acknowledgement of good work, etc, can do the trick to make people feel good.

2. *Celebrate* - Having small celebrations and rituals, even once or twice a year can be a welcome break from the monotony of work, something to look forward to and use their creative talents. Even a small cake cutting for each employees birthday with a tea party can work wonders for morale boosting.

3. *Support and flexibility* - Supporting employees during personal turmoil by giving them a patient listening, flexible work hours and financial support as required can allay anxieties. Being approachable and empathetic can make a workplace less stressful.

4. *Conflict resolution* - Trying to resolve conflicts under closed doors and giving both parties an equal opportunity to present their side, gives them confidence that their will be no partiality and makes them feel heard.

A happy team makes a loyal workforce. Most importantly make sure to take care of your own mental health, coz unless you are healthy, you cannot help others keep healthy.

Long post alert!!!

Hey everyone...
Setting the ball rolling on a new series (hopefully) where I will be sharing awareness about mental health once a week. I have always been passionate about reducing stigma and creating increased awareness about mental health issues, but have not been actively doing it across social media so far. I was recently inspired to convert my continued offline efforts in this direction in the online space as well by , who spoke about using all mediums available to spread the word in his recent talk at a conference.
Looking at how full my plate is, being a mother of 2, a clinician, hospital administrator, speaker, author, etc. I realised I could only make the commitment to post once a week. Being blessed with an incredible support sysytem both at home and at work, I thought it was time to do more. As a token of gratitude towards every mental health warrior who is tirelessly trying to brigde the gap between myths and facts, this is my 2 cents.
This series would be a reflection of the work being done in the area of mental health by me and my peers as well as some take away points for everyone.
Did you know that 1 in every 4 people are dealing with a mental health issue? And that help is available? You only need to ask, reach out and know your friendly neighbourhood mental health professional. Till next Saturday...
