21/02/26: At the Uttarakhand State Chapter of RSSDI Annual Meeting (UKRSSDI) held at Jim Corbett National Park , Dr. Sunil Gupta delivered the Keynote Address on “Lipohypertrophy: A Hidden Epidemic in Insulin Injection Therapy.” 💉📊

The session was chaired by Dr. Ravi Kant, HOD, Dept. of Endocrinology, Rishikesh & Scientific Chairman of the conference. 👨‍⚕️

The session was highly engaging and well received ✨, with multiple queries addressed on needle/syringe usage, local skin reactions at injection sites, glycemic variability due to LH, and related concerns.

Dr. Gupta highlighted that the prevalence of Lipohypertrophy (LH) in Central India is approximately 65% in Type 1 Diabetes and 33% in insulin-treated Type 2 Diabetes 📈. Since LH sites are painless, patients often prefer injecting at these areas — increasing the risk of ketosis ⚠️, unexplained hypoglycaemia, and glycemic variability.

He emphasized that these preventable complications can be avoided through proper education and regular site inspection 🩺📚.

Dr. Gupta appealed to all clinicians to “Think Lipo” 💡 and ensure injection site examination every 3–4 months in all insulin users. He urged every diabetes care professional to actively empower people with diabetes, especially regarding correct insulin injection techniques 🤝.
