Three basic apply in the use of :
1 Open drains that utilise the principle of gravity
2 Semi-open drains that work on the principle of the capillary effect
3 Closed drain systems that utilise suction.
For of drain:-
If a drain is used at all, the following principles may apply.
● Drains put in to cover bleeding may usually be removed after #24 hours, e.g. thyroidectomy.
● Drains put in to drain collections usually can be removed after , e.g. mastectomy.
● Drains put in because of should be left until the infection is subsiding or the drainage is minimal.
● Drains put in to cover anastomoses should be removed at about #5–7days.
*Common bile duct -tubes should remain in for #10 days. The 10-day period is required to minimise the risk of biliary peritonitis after removal
