We treated a very unique case at Pulse Clinic & Hospital recently.
A 60 year old male, was suffering from abdominal angina. This means he would experience severe pain after eating anything. He was hence, unable to eat, lost a lot of weight & had become very weak.
The CT scan showed blockage in mesenteric arteries ( 3 arteries in total). These are the arteries that supply blood to the intestines & abdomen. However, there was no place to open up the vessels to carry out routine angioplasty & stenting.
One of the arteries had to be opened up to ensure direct, high-pressure & adequate blood supply to intestines to relieve the pain.
What we did?
General Surgeon Dr. Suneet Sud, opened up the abdomen & brought out the intestine loop with the attached mesentery. Using sonographic guidance we punctured the small patent branch of the intestine & pushed a micro guide wire into the blocked artery. The blocked artery was opened over the guide wire with balloon angioplasty & a metal stent was placed & normal blood flow was obtained.
The patient could start eating within 24 hours.
This customised procedure was the brainchild of our founders & a very unique way to treat the patient.
