I was a perfectionist. And I was so proud of it. My people would know.
I used to beat myself up mentally LITERALLY most of the time for not doing a task better, painting better,cooking better, sleeping better (on time) and every other thing you can possibly imagine. My inner critic sitting in my head always said, "what man, what is this? You are better than this!" but I never dared to ask what is BETTER?
Better is a term used to describe something that can be improved since it's not up to the mark. UP TO THE MARK? Now what is that? which mark? The one that I created for myself or society created for me? Is it okay if my MARK is way below yours? maybe my BETTER is different than yours. Example-Maybe I am happy getting 70% in my exams and you are no one to tell me that I could do better? Coz don't you see? I am happy and excited for that 70% itself. I am not gonna preach for that 100% because I know MYSELF and I honour myself for being ME.
Today, when I am not afraid of being alone and talk to myself, I am there for myself no matter what. My habit of perfecting one thing till I get exhausted is gone. My mental emotional physical health has improved because I have started embracing my IMPERFECTIONS. When I am stressed, instead of looking for solace outside in things and people, I give priority to myself and my inner being.
When you are compassionate enough to forgive your friends for their mistakes then why not forgive yourself for your mistakes and start embracing yourself for who you are realising that mistakes/shortcomings are a part of you.
All of this boils down to one thing-
Before being good to people,
be good to yourself.
