Hundreds of resident doctors were verbally and physically abused at ITO in Delhi and thereafter detained on Monday,28th December. Residents claim that even the female doctors were beaten up by the male policemen and there are several videos on twitter to support their allegations. Why are they protesting? The Central Government announced reservation of 27% of the All India Quota seats in medical courses and 10% reservation for EWS with an income limit of Rs.8 lakh p.a. This decision is being contested in the SC with the next hearing being on 6th January to allow for judiciary’s winter break. This delay in counselling and admission is leading to a severe shortage of healthcare workers and leading to overburdening of resident doctors. They have been protesting peacefully for a month, hoping for the process to be expedited. These residents are the frontline workers who have done the bulk of the work in the fight against covid and their services will be absolutely imperative to fight the Omicron variant.During the second wave, they sacrificed their own mental and physical health to do their duties so that an overwhelmed country could see the light of another day. We live in a country where a hero being bitten by a snake receives more media coverage than our doctors being thrashed.Banging thalis and showering petals isn’t enough to thank them, we MUST move past the rhetoric and amplify their voices and demand better treatment for our
