Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.

Despite its prevalence, OCD is one of the most misunderstood health conditions out there. Perhaps due to stereotypical portrayals in the media, many people have ideas about it that simply aren’t true.

If you have OCD, you may be ashamed and embarrassed about the condition, but treatment can be effective.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘂𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝘅𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀?

Worries, doubts, and anxieties are a normal part of life. It’s natural to worry about an unpaid bill, an upcoming job interview, or a first date. But “normal” worry becomes excessive when it’s persistent and uncontrollable. You worry every day about “what ifs” and worst-case scenarios, you can’t get anxious thoughts out of your head, and it interferes with your daily life.

Constant worrying, negative thinking, and always expecting the worst can take a toll on your emotional and physical health. It can sap your emotional strength, leave you feeling restless and jumpy, cause insomnia, headaches, stomach problems, and muscle tension, and make it difficult to concentrate at work or school.

If you suffer from chronic anxiety and worry, chances are you look at the world in ways that make it seem more threatening than it really is. For example, you may overestimate the possibility that things will turn out badly, jump immediately to worst-case scenarios, or treat every anxious thought as if it were fact. You may also discredit your own ability to handle life’s problems, assuming you’ll fall apart at the first sign of trouble.

Keeping worries to yourself only causes them to build up until they seem overwhelming. But saying them out loud can often help. Speak and confide in a family member or in a trusted friend.

One in four people will struggle with mental health at some point in their lives. And with the coronavirus pandemic and troubled economy, many are in crisis right now. More than ever, people need a trustworthy place to turn to for guidance and hope. We are here to help at 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲.

Many women have heard of postpartum depression, but may not be as familiar with postpartum obsessive-compulsive disorder, or postpartum OCD.

Sometimes, OCD can start while you are still pregnant, just like depression, a condition called perinatal OCD. You may even have OCD prior to pregnancy as well, but the hormones, stress, and life changes of pregnancy and bringing a baby into the world may just make it more apparent, leading to an actual diagnosis.

What is important to remember, however, no matter what you may be experiencing, is that the postpartum period can be a time in a woman's life when she is at high risk for mental health disorders. It may be postpartum depression or it may be OCD, but either way, the struggles you are experiencing are nothing to be ashamed of or to be silent about.

The bottom line is that if you have any suspicion that something is just not right about your mental health after having a baby, please seek help because treatment is readily available.

The birth of a baby can trigger a jumble of powerful emotions, from excitement and joy to fear and anxiety. But it can also result in something you might not expect — depression.

Postpartum depression isn't a character flaw or a weakness. Sometimes it's simply a complication of giving birth. If you have postpartum depression, prompt treatment can help you manage your symptoms and help you bond with your baby.

Many things can trigger anger, including stress, family problems, and financial issues. For some people, anger is caused by an underlying disorder, such as alcoholism or depression. Anger itself isn't considered a disorder, but anger is a known symptom of several mental health conditions.
