Why is the HPV Vaccine Vital?
The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a extremely common virus that can lead to various cancers, most notably cervical cancer in women, as well as oropharyngeal and other anogenital cancers in both men and women.
• Cancer Prevention: It is effectively a "cancer prevention vaccine." When administered at a young age, it provides nearly 100% protection against the HPV strains that cause the majority of cervical cancers.
• Maximum Efficacy: The vaccine is most effective when given before any exposure to the virus (during the 9–16 age window), as the immune response is much stronger in pre-teens and young teens.
• Public Health: Widespread vaccination reduces the overall prevalence of the virus, protecting the entire community.

On this , CanSupport joins the World Health Organization (WHO) to champion the 2026 theme: “Together for health. Stand with science.”

This is a powerful call to rebuild trust, celebrate scientific achievements, and turn evidence into action. It reminds us that better health outcomes are built on a collective responsibility to ensure that no one is left behind - especially in palliative care.

In line with this, we should remember that health is a state of physical, social, and mental well-being - not just the absence of disease. Focusing only on the disease means forgetting the human suffering.

Let us stand with science to protect lives, build stronger healthcare systems, and secure a healthier, more compassionate future.

CanSupport- Caring for people with Cancer

We are working towards a caring and supportive society where people with cancer and their families live with dignity, hope and comfort. It is our mission to enable these people to make informed choices while receiving appropriate physical, emotional, social and spiritual support.

Harmala Gupta is a cancer survivor and social activist who has pioneered cancer support services in India. After her brush with cancer, she founded the first cancer support group in India, ‘Cancer Sahyog’ in 1990.

In 1996, she initiated a 3 month pilot project in collaboration with the cancer hospital in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to bring palliative care to the homes of six patients with terminal cancer along with Ruth Wooldridge, a nurse from the UK. This was the beginning of CanSupport’s home-based palliative care programme.
