Every year, National Cancer Awareness Day is observed in India on November 7th as cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with India recording more than 1.5 million new cases each year. Awareness initiatives are critical therefore, to mark this important day, CanSupport organised a special interaction between Dr. Ish*ta Gandhi and the Day Care attendees which made for an informative Q&A. The session aimed to raise awareness about not just cancer prevention but living with the diagnosis. Furthermore to encourage making healthy lifestyle choices, busting common myths, and promoting proactive lifestyles without any stigmas. The patients and the caregivers surely benefitted from the valuable information shared.

A heartwarming instance shared by one of our staff members of an outpatient clinic in Pune, Maharashtra of how considerate creativity and compassionate communication can revolutionise patient care:

"At the OPC, we come across patients with oral cancers who are unable to speak or express themselves due to severe trismus*, making communication a daily challenge.
To ensure their voices are still heard, we’ve developed a simple yet meaningful way to communicate — through handwritten letters.

A way to share their thoughts, needs, emotions and gratitude. This approach has helped us understand our patients’ needs, emotions, and comfort concerns more closely, strengthening the bond of trust and care between our team and them.

Whenever the patient or his caregiver visit the clinic, they bring a note or two along and we reciprocate. He sweetly shared that this written correspondence has made him feel as if our team is his own family as our being there for him brings him peace and courage.

He has even started penning letters filled with wisdom from his own experiences and love to his young son to prepare him for the future.

Even through disease progression, his healing has begun thanks to simply being heard."

*Also called as "lockjaw", it is the inability to fully open the mouth due to jaw muscle spasms or stiffness

CanSupport- Caring for people with Cancer

We are working towards a caring and supportive society where people with cancer and their families live with dignity, hope and comfort. It is our mission to enable these people to make informed choices while receiving appropriate physical, emotional, social and spiritual support.

Harmala Gupta is a cancer survivor and social activist who has pioneered cancer support services in India. After her brush with cancer, she founded the first cancer support group in India, ‘Cancer Sahyog’ in 1990.

In 1996, she initiated a 3 month pilot project in collaboration with the cancer hospital in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to bring palliative care to the homes of six patients with terminal cancer along with Ruth Wooldridge, a nurse from the UK. This was the beginning of CanSupport’s home-based palliative care programme.
