When a child struggles with reading, writing, or understanding despite effort, parents often wonder where to start.
Begin by seeking guidance from teachers, special educators, psychologists, occupational and speech therapists, and the pediatrician.
Early identification and the right support can transform a child’s learning journey.

Sometimes parents say —
“Bas school miss ho gaya tha, thoda padhai mein gap aa gaya hai.”

Let’s understand the difference

Learning Gap:

Baccha thoda peeche reh gaya — illness, chhuttiyan, ya weak foundation ki wajah se.
Thoda extra revision aur regular practice se catch up kar sakta hai.

Specific Learning Disability (SLD):

Baccha intelligent hai, par reading, writing ya maths mein baar-baar struggle karta hai,
even after regular help.
Yeh brain ka processing difference hota hai — not lack of effort.

The key is to identify early, support wisely, and never label harshly.

Because every child learns — just at their own pace, in their own style.

Needs & Abilities — turning “disability” into

Cure vs. Mainstreaming in SLD

Specific Learning Disability (SLD) is not a disease that needs a cure — it’s a learning difference that needs understanding and support.

Let’s stop trying to “fix” them and start helping them shine in the mainstream.

“Will my child ever learn?”

Every parent with a child having learning difficulties asks one heartfelt question

The answer is a big YES!
A child with a Specific Learning Disability is intelligent and capable — they just learn in a different way.
With the right support, structured teaching, and patient guidance, every child can bloom at their own pace.

Let’s shift the focus from disability to possibility.

Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined in the DSM-5-TR that affects a child’s ability to acquire and use academic skills — particularly in reading, writing, or mathematics — even when intelligence, motivation, and schooling are adequate.

SLD reflects how the brain processes language or numbers differently, not low intelligence.

Children often show uneven profiles — strong reasoning or creativity alongside weak academic skills.

Early screening and structured, multisensory intervention are the best predictors of success.

Types of SLD

SLD with Impairment in Reading (Dyslexia): difficulty decoding, reading fluency, or comprehension.

SLD with Impairment in Written Expression (Dysgraphia): difficulty with spelling, grammar, or written organization.

SLD with Impairment in Mathematics (Dyscalculia): difficulty understanding numbers, symbols, or performing calculations.

Other learning difficulties such as Auditory Processing Disorder, Language Processing Disorder, Nonverbal Learning Disability, and Visual Perceptual/Motor Deficits can be related —they often co-occur or contribute to learning challenges.
