Colore**al Cancer Is 90% Curable When Detected Early.

Colore**al cancer is often highly treatable when detected early. In many cases, it develops slowly from polyps that can be identified and removed before they become cancerous.
Screening tests such as colonoscopy play a key role in early detection, sometimes years before symptoms appear.
Possible warning signs include:
• Blood in the stool
• Unexplained weight loss
• Persistent fatigue
• Changes in bowel habits
These symptoms can have many causes, but they should always be evaluated by a doctor.
Treatment for colore**al cancer typically involves surgery and may include other therapies. In experienced centres, surgical care is planned with a focus on organ preservation, smoother recovery, and improved long-term outcomes, tailored to each patient’s condition.
Awareness and timely screening remain among the most effective tools we have. Early evaluation and expert care can significantly influence outcomes.

Global health alert - rise of cancers in the young

Cancer is generally considered a disease of old age. However, recent data shows that early-onset cancers (under 50) are increasing: incidence is up 79% and deaths are up 28% since 1990.

Biggest burden: breast, lung, stomach & colore**al cancers.
Fastest rising: nasopharyngeal & prostate cancers.
Main drivers: poor diet, alcohol, to***co, obesity & inactivity.

Middle-SDI countries like India are seeing especially sharp increases, with cases projected to keep climbing through 2030.

This is a wake-up call for prevention, healthier lifestyles, and stronger screening programs.

40 years of AIIMS GI Surgery
The Department of GI Surgery at AIIMS, New Delhi was established four decades ago with a clear vision — world-class patient care, rigorous training, cutting-edge research, and service to society.
This is the place where surgeons are challenged, shaped, and transformed.
Where courage, humility, teamwork, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence become part of your DNA.
Where academics, surgical principles, and uncompromising patient care are woven into everyday life.
AIIMS is where the deep, unshakeable foundation of GI Surgery is laid — and on that foundation, surgeons build skyscrapers.
Sleepless nights, empty stomachs, 24×7 work culture, and lifelong friendships… this department gives you everything, and asks everything in return.
Proud to be part of this legacy.
It shaped my foundations, my thought process, and my unwavering commitment to excellence and patient care.
They say a surgeon’s life unfolds in three decades —
the first learning how to operate,
the second learning whom to operate,
and the third learning whom not to operate.
At AIIMS, all of that was compressed into just three years.
Grateful to return today and celebrate a legacy that continues to inspire, push boundaries, and serve society.

Marathon Running & Colon Health: What You Should Know

A recent study raised eyebrows by suggesting that long-distance runners might have more colon polyps than expected. As a runner, you might be wondering — should I be worried?
Here’s the scoop:
✅ Running is still GOOD for your health — it lowers your overall cancer risk.
✅ The study isn’t conclusive — it didn’t compare runners to non-runners directly.
✅ What is clear: Colon cancer is rising in younger adults, and screening matters.
✅ If you're 45+, get screened. If you have symptoms (blood in stool, fatigue, bowel changes), talk to your doctor — don’t brush it off as “just training.”

Academic meetings are powerful reminders of why we do what we do — to learn, share, and ultimately improve patient care. Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh — an institution known for its academic excellence and surgical innovation — provided the perfect setting for such meaningful discussions.
Had the privilege of being part of PGI Surgery Update 2025 – “Reimagining HPB Onco-Surgery” at PGIMER, Chandigarh, a thoughtfully curated conference that brought together experts from across the country to discuss advances in hepatopancreatobiliary oncology.
I shared our experience and surgical techniques in sessions on robotic liver resection for colore**al liver metastases and minimally invasive/robotic redo surgery for incidental gallbladder cancer — topics that continue to evolve and challenge conventional thinking.
Grateful to the organizing team for creating a platform that truly embodies the spirit of teaching, collaboration, and continuous learning, all in the pursuit of better outcomes for our patients.
