Health Tips: Protect Kids from Mercury Exposure

Mercury (Hg) is commonly used in household items such as thermometers, BP Apparatus and it may be found in high quantities in some types of fish (some kept in Aquarium).
Children are more prone than adults to the harmful effects of mercury, since kids' brains and nervous systems are still developing.
The Environmental Protection Agency suggests how to protect children from exposure to mercury:
• Eat a healthy, balanced diet, but limit fish that may be high in mercury, such as shark, swordfish, king mackerel and tilefish.
• Deposit your old thermometers/ Sphygmomanometer that contain mercury with the nearest Health Department and replace with digital thermometers/ Sphygmomanometer.
• Never allow a child to play with or handle mercury.
• Do not burn or heat mercury.
• If you spill mercury, do not vacuum it. Instead, place a mask on face, collect the globules in a plastic container and tightly closed the container and contact the nearest health department or environmental agency for its final disposal.
