The cervical spine is located at the very top of the spinal column. The seven vertebral levels within this region, which form the human neck, are classified as C1-C7. There is an additional cervical-level injury known as a C8 injury which relates to damage to the spinal cord root. This area of the spinal cord controls signals to the back of the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands and diaphragm. In a cervical SCI, all regions of the body below the level of injury or top of the back may be affected. At times, a cervical injury is accompanied by the loss of physical sensation, respiratory issues, inability to regulate body temperature, incontinence and sexual dysfunction.
