Dementia is not just a condition of ageing—it is one of the most pressing global health challenges of our time.

Ranked as the 7th leading cause of death worldwide, it affects millions of individuals and deeply impacts families and caregivers every single day.

This World Health Day, it’s time we broaden our understanding of health to include cognitive well-being and long-term care.

It’s time we bring dementia into the global health conversation.

For individuals living with dementia, the environment plays a powerful role in how they feel and function each day.

A calm, well-designed space can reduce confusion, ease anxiety, and support independence.

Simple elements — like quiet areas, clear signage, proper lighting, and safe flooring — can make everyday navigation easier and more comfortable.

Thoughtful design is not just about space. It is about creating an environment where individuals feel safe, supported, and at ease.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A, we believe that care goes beyond people — it is built into the spaces we create.

Sometimes, small changes are easy to overlook.

What may seem like forgetfulness can sometimes be a sign that a person is struggling with more than just memory, it can affect how they think, communicate, and manage everyday life.

Recognising these signs early can make a meaningful difference. It allows families to seek the right support, plan care, and create a safer, more understanding environment.

If you notice these changes in someone you love, approach them with patience and empathy. What they need most is reassurance, not correction.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A., we believe early understanding and early intervention leads to better care.

As dementia progresses, communication can become more challenging. A loved one may take longer to respond, struggle to find words, or seem withdrawn.

But small changes in how we communicate can make a meaningful difference.

Giving them time, simplifying conversations, and including them with patience and respect can help them feel heard and valued.

Even when words become difficult, connection is still possible.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A, we believe communication is not just about speaking — it’s about understanding.

Caring for a loved one with dementia is a journey that changes over time. The SMILE framework offers a gentle way to navigate this experience.

See each stage with acceptance. Create meaningful moments. Stay connected with others. Find space for laughter. And be open to adapting along the way.

Supporting caregivers is essential — because when caregivers feel supported, care becomes stronger, more compassionate, and more sustainable.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A, we believe care extends to those who give it, every single day.

As dementia progresses, recognizing familiar faces can become difficult, sometimes even one’s own reflection.

This can feel confusing and overwhelming. But even when memory fades, emotional connection remains.

A familiar voice, a gentle presence, a consistent caregiver, these still bring comfort.

At Hope Ek A.S.H.A, we focus on consistency in care, because feeling safe matters as much as being remembered.

At Hope Ek Asha, caring for our elders means understanding the quiet challenges they face every day. For many residents living with dementia, even simple movement has become difficult, and standing exercises are often no longer possible.

That’s why our caregivers guide them through gentle seated exercises. These movements help keep their muscles active, support circulation, and encourage mental engagement — all while ensuring comfort and safety.

Every small movement matters. Each stretch, lift, and motion helps our residents stay connected to their strength, their bodies, and the moment.

At A.S.H.A., we are privileged to care for individuals who become part of our extended family. Our approach focuses on personalised care that respects every resident’s needs, comfort, and dignity.

Here, Vinti Khanna, daughter-in-law of our resident Nishaat Aunty, shares how this thoughtful and attentive care has made a meaningful difference for her family.

Note: I wanted to focus on the cleanliness part too, because with dementia and Alzheimer's, often dignity goes out of the window. It struck me so I added the comfort and dignity that comes with personalized care.

This Holi, every elder was part of the celebration — every hand touched colour, every face wore a smile and every heart felt the joy of the festival. From crafting their own Pichkaaris to creating art together, from swaying to old Bollywood Holi songs to dancing with the whole family — every moment was designed so that everyone belonged.

Because at A.S.H.A., inclusion is not just a value. It is the way we celebrate, the way we care and the way we live.

Every colour. Every smile. Every elder. Together.

This International Women's Day, we celebrate the many ways women lead at Hope Ek Asha. From the patience and skill of caregivers, to the calm assurance of clinical care, the empathy of counselling, the joy created through engagement, and the leadership that guides and strengthens our work every day—each role reflects care in action. Inspired by a vision that places dignity, compassion, and understanding at the heart of dementia care, these women shape an environment where every individual is supported with respect and humanity. Through their dedication and strength, they remind us that leadership in care is often quiet, yet profoundly powerful. On this Women’s Day, we dedicate our gratitude and warm wishes to all women who lead with care.
