International Cochlear Implant Day β Restoring Sound, Transforming Lives
Every year on 25 February, the world observes International Cochlear Implant Day to raise awareness about hearing loss and the life-changing impact of cochlear implant technology.
A cochlear implant is an advanced medical device that bypasses the damaged inner ear (cochlea) and directly stimulates the auditory nerve, enabling individuals with severe to profound hearing loss to perceive sound. For children born with hearing impairment, cochlear implant surgery is truly a medical breakthroughβoffering them the opportunity to hear, speak, learn, and integrate into mainstream society.
Today, newborn hearing screening is routinely performed within 24 hours of birth using Otoacoustic Emission (OAE). If results indicate a βrefer,β repeat screening is done at 3 months, followed by confirmatory tests such as BERA or ASSR when required. Early diagnosis allows timely intervention, parental counselling, and evaluation for cochlear implant candidacy in eligible children.
Cochlear implantation is possible when the auditory (8th cranial) nerve is intact and hearing loss arises from cochlear dysfunction. Even certain structural cochlear abnormalities can be successfully treated with this procedure.
Early detection and early rehabilitation are crucial. When a child can hear, they can develop speech, language, learning, and social skillsβleading to a confident and independent life.
Let us spread awareness about newborn hearing screening and early management of hearing loss so that every child gets the chance to hear, speak, and thrive.
