Every year before Holi, I hear the same reassurance in clinic:
“Don’t worry doctor, I’m using herbal colours.”
The truth is, even natural pigments can irritate the skin. The real issue isn’t just what the colour contains, it’s how long it sits on your skin, how strong your barrier is, and how aggressively you try to remove it later.
Holi skin damage usually happens in two phases.
First, barrier disruption from colours, sun exposure, and dryness.
Second, over-scrubbing and harsh removal that leads to rashes, acne flare-ups, and post-inflammatory pigmentation.
A simple pre-Holi routine makes a huge difference. Strengthen the barrier. Protect with sunscreen. Create a protective layer so pigments don’t cling directly to your skin.
And after Holi, resist the urge to scrub. Calm, cleanse gently, and focus on repair.
Festivals should leave memories, not skin damage.
If your skin reacts every Holi with rashes, breakouts, or tanning, it’s time to prepare properly this year.
