A 17-year-old female presented with a chief complaint of right fifth finger pain. The patient reported that she was playing volleyball when she blocked an opponent’s shot and sustained an injury to her right fifth finger.
Significant findings:

Physical exam revealed an open dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the right fifth digit. X-ray confirmed dislocation and revealed no fractures. The patient received a tetanus booster, Cefazolin, and the dislocation was then washed out and reduced. Multiple reduction attempts were made and were only successful once the metacarpophalangeal joints were held in 90 degree flexion, which relaxed the lateral bands and enabled the finger to be reduced.

A picture of a blood clot removed from an 80-year-old patient after he presented with a 2-day-long nosebleed. According to the accompanying text, the patient coded shortly after arrival at an emergency room, and a blood clot that went “from his nose down his airway and into his lungs” was found and removed while trying to intubate.

A blood clot is a clump of blood that has changed from a liquid to a gel-like or semisolid state. Clotting is a necessary process that can prevent you from losing too much blood in certain instances, such as when you’re injured or cut but they can also form when they aren't needed and cause serious medical problems.
When a blood clot occurs in an artery, it’s called an arterial clot. This type of clot causes symptoms immediately and requires emergency treatment. The symptoms of an arterial clot include severe pain, paralysis of parts of the body, or both. It can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
A blood clot that occurs in a vein is called a venous clot. These types of clots may build up more slowly over time, but they can still be life-threatening. The most serious type of venous clot is called deep vein thrombosis.

Is running bad for your knees? 😊
Great post by The Freshman Physio:
“Recent evidence shows runners had similar age related changes to non runners with knee OA on X-RAY. .
They also founds runners reported less symptoms suggesting benefits of running for knee health.
This is not a call to get everyone running with knee pain. But certainly do NOT get all your runners to stop and pick up cycling as a new sport.
Runners need to be reassured they can continue without fear and may even lead to improvements in symptoms.
As always, running needs to be programmed and loaded appropriate to a runners ability and symptoms. And always coupled with an appropriate strengthening program.
📚Running does not increase symptoms or structural progression in people with knee osteoarthritis: data from the osteoarthritis initiative - Lo et al. (2018)”
