कैमूर जिला, बिहार में स्थित एक महत्वपूर्ण ज़िला है । यह उत्तर प्रदेश के सीमावर्ती ज़िलों को जोड़ता है। कैमूर ज़िले की स्थापना 17 मार्च, 1991 को हुई थी । तब इसे रोहतास ज़िले से अलग कर दिया गया था । 1994 तक इसे भभुआ ज़िला कहा जाता था । भभुआ के पास मुंडेश्वरी मंदिर में एक शिलालेख में राजा उदयसेन को क्षेत्र का शासक प्रमुख बताया गया है।
कैमूर का इतिहास पुराना और दिलचस्प है। तीसरी शताब्दी ईसा पूर्व से पांचवीं शताब्दी ईस्वी तक यह मगध के मौर्य, कुषाण और गुप्त शासकों के अधीन था । सातवीं शताब्दी में यह ज़िला कन्नौज के शासक हर्षवर्द्धन के नियंत्रण में आ गया। इस क्षेत्र पर पाल वंश शासकों ने भी शासन किया। उनके बाद चन्दौली का यहां शासन रहा और बारहवीं शताब्दी में ताराचंदी ने कैमूर ज़िले पर राज किया ।
कैमूर ज़िले में मानव निवास का सबसे पहला प्रमाण लेहड़ा जंगल में पाए जाने वाले शैल चित्रों से मिलता है. ये शैल चित्र करीब 20,000 साल पुराने हैं. कुछ किंवदंतियों के मुताबिक, खरवार रोहतास के पहाड़ी इलाकों में मूल बसने वाले थे ।

सिर्फ उक्त संक्षिप्त इतिहास में कैमूर की समृद्ध धरोहर को समाहित नहीं किया जा सकता है। इस विषय पर विस्तृत शोध की आवश्यकता है।
