Audiology is a branch of science that studies hearing, balance, and related disorders. Its practitioners, who treat those with hearing loss and proactively prevent related damage are audiologists. hearing tests, otoacoustic emission measurements, videonystagmography, and electrophysiologic tests), audiology aims to determine whether someone can hear within the normal range, and if not, which portions of hearing (high, middle, or low frequencies) are affected and to what degree. If an audiologist determines that a hearing loss or vestibular abnormality is present he or she will provide recommendations to a patient as to what options (e.g. hearing aid, cochlear implants, appropriate medical referrals) may be of assistance. In addition to testing hearing, audiologists can also work with a wide range of clientele in rehabilitation (people with tinnitus, auditory processing disorders, users of cochlear implants and/or hearing aids), from pediatric populations to veterans and may perform assessment of tinnitus and the vestibular system.

Signs of hearing loss

Hearing loss is sometimes sudden, but often it's gradual and you may not notice it at first. Being aware of the early signs can help you identify the problem quickly.

It's important to spot hearing loss as soon as possible, because treatment is often more beneficial if started early.

General signs of hearing loss
Early signs of hearing loss can include:

difficulty hearing other people clearly and misunderstanding what they say, especially in group situations asking people to repeat themselves
listening to music or watching television with the volume higher than other people need
difficulty hearing the telephone or doorbell
finding it difficult to tell which direction noise is coming from
regularly feeling tired or stressed, from having to concentrate while listening
In some cases, you may recognise signs of hearing loss in someone else before they notice it themselves. Research suggests it takes 10 years from the time someone notices they have hearing loss, before they do anything about it.

If you also hear a ringing, buzzing or whistling sound in your ears, this could be a sign of tinnitus, which is often associated with hearing loss.

EXERCISES TO IMPROVE HEARING

Hearing loss can be a scary feeling. However there are exercises you can perform to help improve both your concentration and current hearing ability. Some of these exercises include:

NOISE FILTERING EXERCISE
Noise filtering is a simple exercise used to help you improve the ear’s ability to hear by only choosing sounds you want to hear. You will need two or more music sources and a person to talk to you. Play your first music source in a low tone while having conversation with your person. Sit upright, do not raise your voice, and focus to understand each other during conversation. After a few minutes add the second source of music, and continue your conversation. Be sure to speak in the same tone you did when your single source of sound was playing. Practice noise filtering and challenge yourself by adding more sources, one at a time.

SOUND SOURCE LOCATION EXERCISE
Sharpen your hearing and sense of direction with this fun exercise. This exercise works best in a quiet, secluded place. Items you need include a horn and a partner. Give your partner the horn, close your eyes and have him go off to a location away from you. Tell your partner to make 2 to 3 second bursts of sound and you point out where he is located. Your partner should vary his location and distance from you.

SOUND CLUES
Sound clues is a simple exercise to help you learn to recognize different environmental sounds in your environment. All you need to do is close your eyes, concentrate, and listen to the sounds in your environment. Think about the sounds you hear, and one by one try to decipher what you hear. The more you practice, the more sounds you will learn to recognize and the better you will be at pinpointing their location.

BRAIN EXERCISES
Here is an interesting fact that a lot of people are not aware of. Humans hear with their brain. As sound waves enter your ears, they move to the eardrum and send messages to the brain. The brain processes sound and interprets what you have heard. If you give your brain regular exercise, it will help keep your 5 senses sharp. Below are some simple, yet effective brain exercises you can do to improve your hearing:

Learning to play a musical instrument
Solving puzzles such as Rubik’s cube, Sudoku, crossword, or jigsaw puzzles
Solving math problems without using a calculator
Learning a new repetitive activity using your fingers such as knitting or crocheting
*You may not see positive results at first but the more you practice and learn the more positive your results with be in the end.

YOGIC (YOGA) EXERCISES
A breathing exercise used in yoga to help improve hearing is pranayama. Pranayama helps clear any blockage in the auditory canal, ensuring smooth circulation through the nerves to all the vital organs of the body. There are also yoga postures; especially inverted postures that can help you improve blood circulation in that area. Some effective inverted yoga postures to practice include:

Halsana (Plough Pose)
Sarvangasana (Shoulder stand)
Karnapidasana (Knee to Ear Pose)
*Just remember for balance purposes, before practicing inverted postures, make sure you do not have any discharge or inflammation in your ear canal.

MEDITATION
Meditation is another way to help improve hearing. You should start by concentrating on the sound of your breathing and then concentrate on the sounds in your surroundings. Try to transition back and forth between sounds from a distance and ones in close proximity. The more you practice this yogic exercise, the more you will be able to improve your hearing.

Hearing loss may require professional treatment and hearing equipment.

How To Improve You Hearing Naturally

1. The first thing you want to do to improve your hearing ability is to try and get your ears used to a quieter environment. If your watching TV, turn the volume down a few notches and make sure you're in a quiet room. If you continue to listen to devices on a lower volume your ears adapt and they are forced to work harder, and therefore increase their hearing ability. The same goes for radios etc.

2. Check for ear wax. It may seem like a simple technique, but cleaning your ears out can dramatically improve your hearing. Ear wax can lodge deep inside your ears and can cover your ear drums leading to hearing loss. A build up of wax can also make your ears very sore and cause them discomfort. When you're cleaning your ears, use a cotton bud and work your way round the edges of your ears so to not push any wax deeper.
You can slowly rub the bit of cartilage on the exterior of you ear (the bit that sticks out in the middle of your ear) in a clockwise motion. This technique can bring the majority of the ear wax to the surface making it easy to remove.

3. Avoid listening to in-ear devices (headphones) loudly. It's tempting to put your favourite track on full blast. However, the headphones that sit inside your ear can have a devastating effect on your ears over time and the ability to hear you lose from them is impossible to re-gain. People who use headsets at work and radios are notorious for getting the condition known as Tinnitus. This condition can have a huge effect on peoples lives. It is a permanent condition that leads to hearing loss. Its commonly caused by such devices like headphones and headsets. Tinnitus is so bad that it can lead to depression as the ringing or buzzing in the ears is constant.

4. Clean your ears regularly. It's an obvious thing to do but cleaning your ears regularly is effective in keeping healthy ears. Because most people would clean their ears in the shower with soap, remember to clean around the backs and inside your ears. Make sure that you rinse them properly afterwards though as the chemicals in soaps can irritate our ears if they aren't washed off. Our ears can become itchy and flaky leading to a build up in wax as the ear tries to clean itself out. So rinsing your ears out after using soap is crucial!

5. Exercise and go for a quiet walk. Research has shown that people who are physically fit have better hearing than those who aren't. Consider going for a walk in the woods or somewhere rural. Much like adapting to a quieter device, going for a walk in a quiet place trains your ears to focus in on distant and quiet sounds. The added aerobic effect of walking also increase blood flow to your ears leading to increased hearing.

6. Cut out caffeine in your diet. Research has shown that caffeine can hinder your ability to hear effectively. The long term impact on the body leads to higher blood pressure and a high blood pressure can lead to a loss in hearing. The same goes for smoking and anything else that can raise blood pressure and cause a lack of oxygen getting to your ears. Just switch to de-caff coffee as an alternative. To improve your hearing further, cut out any extra salts in your diet too! The effects of smoking and high levels in salt lead to an increase in ageing of the body which contributes to a gradual loss in hearing.

7. Try drinking a pint of milk a day. Research has shown that you need a healthy amount of calcium in your diet for proper ear health. Like all bones in the body, the calcium and vitamin D in milk contribute to strengthening the bones and cartilage in your ears. A study of 70 women who suffered from hearing loss showed that they had significantly less bone density in their ears then those who had no hearing problems.

8. Get plenty of vitamin A in your diet. Although still not completely understood, studies have shown that vitamin A can improve the inner ears sensitivity to noise.

9. Look after your teeth. Its still not understood why but the amount of teeth you have has a direct correlation to your hearing ability. Try to brush your teeth at least twice a day to keep them in good order and ultimately to prevent hearing loss.

10. Get your 5 a day. People who eat their 5 a day portions of fresh fruit and vegetables are less likely to develop hearing loss then those who don't. The essential vitamins and minerals found in fruit and vegetables all contribute toward a healthy body and delay the ageing process which helps with improving hearing as well as other bodily functions.

So, apply these techniques to improve your hearing to your daily routine. They are simple but effective. Because loss of hearing is a gradual thing, and is permanent, you'll only be able to stabilise your hearing loss and prevent further loss but not re-gain any hearing ability. It's never too late to start trying to improve your hearing!

Signs and Symptoms of hearing loss in children

The signs and symptoms of hearing loss are different for each child. If you think that your child might have hearing loss, ask the child’s doctor for a hearing screening as soon as possible. Don’t wait!

Even if a child has passed a hearing screening before, it is important to look out for the following signs.

Signs in Babies

Does not startle at loud noises.

Does not turn to the source of a sound after 6 months of age.

Does not say single words, such as “dada” or “mama” by 1 year of age.

Turns head when he or she sees you but not if you only call out his or her name. This sometimes is mistaken for not paying attention or just ignoring, but could be the result of a partial or complete hearing loss.

Seems to hear some sounds but not others.

Signs in Children

Speech is delayed.

Speech is not clear.

Does not follow directions. This sometimes is mistaken for not paying attention or just ignoring, but could be the result of a partial or complete hearing loss.

Often says, “Huh?”

Turns the TV volume up too high.

Babies and children should reach milestones in how they play, learn, communicate and act. A delay in any of these milestones could be a sign of hearing loss or other developmental problem.

Below are five little-known facts about today’s modern hearing aids:

1. They’re virtually invisible.

Many of today’s hearing aids sit discreetly and comfortably inside your ear canal, providing both natural sound quality, and discreet and easy use.

2. They automatically adjust to all kinds of soundscapes.

Whether you’re after the ability to discern comments at an all-staff meeting, easy conversation in a crowded restaurant, or the chirp of crickets on a late summer’s evening, recent technological advances have made hearing aids far more versatile than ever before—and in a broad range of sound environments.

3. There is something for just about everyone.

Today’s hearing aid options are amazingly varied. Designers offer styles for the fashion conscious, the trendsetter, the partygoer, the intellectual, the active sports enthusiast, the cautious grandmother, the romantic, the weekend warrior, and even the guy just tired of turning up the volume on the TV.

4. Water, sweat, and dust are no problem while wearing them.

Waterproof, digital hearing aids have arrived. This new feature is built into some newly designed hearing aids for those concerned about water, humidity, and dust. This feature suits people who work in demanding environments, as well as those with active lifestyles—like swimmers, skiers, and sports enthusiasts.

5. They love smartphones, computers, and other prized electronics.

Wireless, digital hearing aids are now the norm. That means seamless connectivity—from smartphones, MP3 players, computers, FM systems, televisions, and other beloved high-tech gadgets—directly into your hearing aid(s), at volumes just right for you.

If you prefer a low-cost hearing aid, one that provides the lowest quality sound reproduction, a discount store or online retailer may be the place for you to shop.

Do You Know These FUN Facts About Hearing?

Cicadas have their hearing organs in their stomachs.

Crickets have their hearing organs in their knees.

Male mosquitoes hear with thousands of tiny hairs growing on their antennae.

Fish do not have ears, but they can hear. They hear pressure changes through ridges on their bodies.

Snakes do not have ears, but their tongues are sensitive to sound vibrations.

In World War I parrots were kept on the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, because of their remarkable sense of hearing. When the parrots heard the enemy aircraft coming they would warn everyone of the approaching danger long before any human ear would hear it.

HERE ARE THE MOST COMMON MYTHS ABOUT HEARING AIDS—AND THE FACTS:

Myth: Hearing aids will make me look “older” and “frail.”
Fact: We understand that you may have some reservations about wearing a hearing aid. We think you will be pleasantly surprised at how small and nearly invisible solutions are. And consider this: hearing aid wearers and their families often comment that hearing loss is far more evident than any size or model of hearing aid!

Myth: One hearing aid will be sufficient, and I can buy it at half the price!
Fact: Binaural hearing aids not only offer the best hearing outcome, they also provide an important dual ear-brain connection and rehabilitate (or retrain) the pathways that deal with language and learning. Where a single hearing aid may help you understand more words, binaural correction is a healthier, more holistic solution for most people with hearing loss.

Myth: Hearing aids squeak horribly whenever you hug someone or touch your hair.
Fact: Some of the most notable advances in hearing aid technology have come in the area of feedback cancellation. Today’s hearing instruments are nothing like the squawking dinosaurs your grandpa used to wear. Designed to be discreet in every way, modern hearing aids are small, unobtrusive, and virtually feedback-free.

Myth: Hearing aids are expensive but they rarely fit.
Fact: Just as feedback cancellation has come a long way, so has the technology we use to program hearing aids specifically to your hearing loss. .

Types of Pediatric Hearing Loss

There are two primary categories of hearing loss in children, congenital (present at birth) and acquired (occurring after birth). These hearing losses may be sensorineural, conductive or mixed.

Possible causes of congenital hearing loss:

Infections during pregnancy (German measles, toxoplasmosis and cytomegolavirus)

Ototoxic medication used during pregnancy

Birth complications (serious infection present at birth, such as toxoplasmosis, herpes, rubella or cytomegolavirus; baby required neonatal intensive care; birth weight less than 3 lbs.; unusual appearance of baby's head, face or ears; baby required blood transfusion; or drugs used for respiratory life-sustaining measures on premature infant)

Disorder of the brain or nervous system

Genetic syndromes, such as Ushers, Down's and Waardenburg's syndromes

Family history of hearing loss

Possible causes of acquired hearing loss:

Untreated middle-ear infections

Other infections, such as meningitis, mumps, measles or whooping cough

Perforation of the eardrum

Excessive noise, such as fireworks or loud music

Disease, such as otosclerosis or Ménière's disease

Serious injury to the head

Ototoxic medication

AUDIOGRAM:

An audiogram is a graph that shows the audible threshold for standardized frequencies as measured by an audiometer. The Y axis represents intensity measured in decibels and the X axis represents frequency measured in Hertz. The threshold of hearing is plotted relative to a standardised curve that represents 'normal' hearing, in dB(HL).

For humans, normal hearing is between −10 dB(HL) and 15 dB(HL) through out 250Hz to 8 kHz.
