The heart maintains continuous circulation through its coordinated electrical and mechanical activity. Its chambers, valves and vascular connections work in unison to deliver oxygen, support metabolism and preserve physiological balance.
This final post in the series recognises the heart as the core of human function and a central subject in clinical learning, research and practice. It also marks the close of the academic countdown with a reminder of the system that sustains every other.

Each kidney is organised into an outer cortex and an inner medulla, where renal pyramids channel filtrate toward the calyces and renal pelvis. This multilobar structure supports efficient urine formation and coordinated regulation of fluid and electrolyte balance.
Filtration begins at the glomerulus, where a specialised three-layer barrier - the fenestrated endothelium, glomerular basement membrane and podocyte filtration slits - ensures selective permeability. This architecture enables plasma filtration while preserving cellular and large molecular components, allowing the kidneys to maintain homeostasis with remarkable precision.

The skin is organised into three primary layers, each with a distinct role. The epidermis forms the protective barrier, the dermis provides strength and elasticity through its vascular and connective components, and the hypodermis offers insulation and support through adipose and connective tissue.
Understanding this layered structure is essential for interpreting wound depth, dermatological conditions and clinical examination of the integumentary system.

All organs and systems are built on four foundational tissue types. Epithelial tissue provides protection and controlled exchange; connective tissue supports and binds; muscle tissue enables movement; and nervous tissue coordinates communication and control.
A clear understanding of these categories strengthens the study of organ structure, physiology and clinical diagnosis across disciplines.
