AI therapists inadvertently prioritize user engagement over safety protocols because their underlying algorithms are often trained to maximize interaction and positive feedback, rather than to follow strict ethical guidelines for mental health care. This algorithmic design can lead to serious risks for vulnerable users.

*Caption*: Though it is important that you feel safe in therapy, equally important is your therapist’s ability to challenge you, to tell you or lead you to things you may not want to know but that are nonetheless necessary. That discomfort is important to the therapeutic process.
Even if an AI therapist did bring you to such a moment of productive discomfort, you could always just regenerate its response, thus shying away from some of the most important work of therapy. Further, it would ‘learn’ from this so as to be even less likely to do something similar in the future.

It is important to remember that AI chatbots are generative: that is, they generate the answers they give you based on its similarity or congruence to the data that the AI model has been trained on. Unlike a therapist, the AI does not have any true psychological knowledge or training— it is guessing, with varying degrees of blindness, as to what the ‘best’ response to you might be. If you would not trust your physical health to ‘guess work,’ don’t trust your mental health to it either!

AI is not all bad. As therapists we believe there is no back or white and AI can assist therapy as well and be a tool for clients if used at the right time with the right prompts.

AI chatbots, despite appearances to the contrary, aren’t conscious and cannot experience empathy— qualities essential in a therapist. They are incapable of reading between the lines, of considering, for example, the harm of giving a younger user, or a vulnerable user a certain kind of response, nor can they feel for what the user is experiencing. This means that its responses can make a situation a lot worse rather than provide any true benefit.

Most AI platforms right now are built for pleasure and profit. This means that the AI ‘wants’ to keep you coming back. This differs starkly from a therapist, who works towards the client or patient’s mental wellbeing or improvement, the same way a doctor works towards their patient’s physical wellness. This means that an AI therapist would do just enough to ensure that the client or patient continues to consult them, even at the cost of the person’s actual mental health.

*Caption*: AI will always agree with the user. It will validate and support anything the user tells them, agree that they are right and correct, and the victim, and whatever else the user indicates they would like to hear.
However, your therapist is meant to challenge you, to ask questions, disagree with you or keep you accountable and grounded. Therapy, and growth, necessarily involve these. You will not be ‘in the right’ every time, and there is always room for improvement. But you won’t hear it in sessions with an AI therapist.

*Caption*: AI chatbots collect the data being fed into them. This data is then used to train the bot, and may also be sold to advertisers, marketers, government institutions, and other organisations.
This means the content of your sessions could be sold to whoever is willing to pay for it. It also means that details from your sessions could come up ‘organically’ when the chatbot talks to other people, or that people inputting specific prompts could gain access to it, as has happened in the past (https://www.wired.com/story/chatgpt-poem-forever-security-roundup/) . However, therapy is meant to be confidential– your therapist will not and indeed cannot disclose details from client sessions, and violation of this confidentiality comes with steep consequences for the therapist. What happens in therapy ought to stay in therapy– something an AI therapist cannot promise.
