Today is World Kidney Day. I-SHARE Foundation would like to pledge its commitment to raising awareness of the importance of kidney health by announcing the launch of “Maadhyam”, our new Immunosuppressants Support Program for financially vulnerable kidney transplant patients.
Drugs suppressing immunity (immunosuppressants) are critical during the transplantation process; they allow the transplanted organ to be accepted by the body of the recipient by preventing reactions that lead to rejection. Unfortunately, nearly 1 in 4 patients do not comply with prescribed post-transplant immunosuppressant regimens. This often leads to rejection of the transplanted kidney. As many as 60% of late acute rejections and 35% of graft loss are due to non-adherence to medication.
The primary reason for this patient non-compliance is the high cost of these immunosuppressants (₹15,000 -₹20,000 per month) coupled with the need for lifelong treatment.
The goal of I-SHARE Foundation’s Immunosuppressants Support Program is to improve treatment outcomes of financially vulnerable post-transplant patients. This will be achieved primarily by subsidizing the high cost of their immunosuppressant therapy and by ensuring that they comply with their prescribed therapy during the subsidy period. As part of this program, patients will also be educated and provided counseling to improve their compliance with the therapy. Other forms of support will also be used to assist patients plan for and become self-reliant for funding their immunosuppressant therapy post the subsidy period.
“Maadhyam”, the name of the program signifies its objective of being a medium of assistance and financial support. I-SHARE Foundation is grateful to Bellwether Capital Pvt. Ltd. (BCPL) who have generously donated Rs. 10 lakhs from their CSR funds to get this program off the ground.
