Having a cataract means your lens has become cloudy. Imagine looking through a foggy or dusty windshield. A cataract makes objects appear blurry, hazy, or less colorful.

Cataracts can be surgically removed. In most cases, you do not have to remove a cataract if the symptoms are not bothersome. You may just need a revised prescription for eyeglasses to improve your vision. In the event that cataracts prevent you from performing activities you need or want, you should consider surgery.

Visit your local eye specialist today if you are experiencing similar problems.

The most common cause of cataracts is ageing. As we age, our normal clear crystalline lens slowly loses its capacity to remain clear. Other causes include diabetes, injury, usage of certain medications, and secondary to other eye diseases such as uveitis and glaucoma.

A cataract usually develops gradually as we age. Thus, subtle changes in vision may not be noticed right away when cataracts first form. Gradually, as cataracts develop, you may experience symptoms such as:

- Painless cloudy, blurry or dim vision

- More difficulty seeing at night or in low light

- Sensitivity to light and glare

- Seeing halos around lights

- Faded or yellowed colours

- The need for brighter light for reading and other activities

- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription

- Double vision within one eye

In order to maintain hydration, including in the eyes, water is essential for the body. However, most people are unaware that it's healthy for the eyes to drink water. They do, however, notice the side effects of dehydration caused by not drinking enough water.
Water helps the eyes stay lubricated by keeping them moist through tears. A lubricant is necessary to keep the eyes moist, and to remove bacteria and dust particles that may enter the eyes. Also, to remove small particles such as pollen and dust.

During dehydration, the body cannot circulate enough water to stay hydrated. This causes the eyes to become dry, itchy, and scratchy. When you blink, there might be a scratching sensation as if something is in your eye.

Other related eye symptoms of dehydration could include:

- Red Eyes
- Blurred Visions
- Problems Focusing
- Burning Sensation in the Eyes
- Headaches

What to do if your eyes are dehydrated:

- Reduce the number of hours you spend viewing screens, including computers, laptops, smartphones, and tablets.
- Drink at least eight glasses of water or more every day.
- Reduce the amount of caffeinated and alcoholic beverages you drink.
- Switch to a low-sodium diet.

Yes, it’s True!! According to various researches smoking can lead to vision loss. Smoking highly increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy and Dry Eye Syndrome.

Let’s Understand How:

i) Age related macular degeneration:
AMD is four times more likely to occur in smokers than nonsmokers. AMD is almost doubled for nonsmokers living with smokers. One way to reduce AMD risk is to avoid smoking.

ii) Cataract:
The risk of cataract in heavy smokers (15 ci******es or more/day) is up to three times greater than that of nonsmokers.

iii) Glaucoma:
Smoking is linked to high blood pressure, cataracts, and diabetes, all of which are risk factors for glaucoma.

iv) Diabetic Retinopathy:
It is more likely to develop if you smoke. For those who already have diabetes, smoking can make it increasingly difficult to manage. It can lead to retinopathy, heart disease, stroke, vascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, foot problems, and many other complications.

v) Dry Eye Syndrome:
It is more than twice as likely to impact smokers as non-smokers.

Prevention:
Quit Smoking, eat healthy foods, control BP and Cholesterol, try to stay active and visit an eye care professional regularly.
