Back pain is no longer just a physical issue—it is deeply connected to stress and modern lifestyle patterns. This article highlights how increasing stress levels are contributing significantly to chronic low back pain, stiffness, and reduced quality of life.

From prolonged sitting and poor posture to mental fatigue and inadequate physical activity, the mind-body connection plays a crucial role in spinal health. Recognizing early symptoms, managing stress effectively, and incorporating simple lifestyle changes like regular exercise, proper ergonomics, and mindfulness can make a meaningful difference.

As healthcare professionals, it is important for us to address not just the structural causes, but also the psychological factors influencing pain. A holistic approach is key to better outcomes and long-term well-being.

🎒 Heavy School Bags & Back Pain in Children

Back pain is no longer a problem seen only in adults. Increasingly, school-going children are reporting neck, shoulder, and back pain — and one major reason is heavy school bags.

When a child carries a bag that is more than 10–15% of their body weight, it puts excessive stress on the developing spine and muscles. Over time, this can lead to poor posture, muscle strain, fatigue, and even early spinal problems.

⚠️ Warning signs in children:
• Complaints of back or shoulder pain
• Leaning forward while walking with the bag
• Red marks from shoulder straps
• Tiredness after carrying the school bag

✅ What can help?
• Keep the school bag weight below 10% of body weight
• Use two wide padded shoulder straps
• Encourage children to carry the bag on both shoulders
• Schools can help by using lockers, digital learning, or lighter book schedules

A healthy spine in childhood is the foundation for lifelong spinal health. Small changes today can prevent big problems tomorrow.

Honored to have been invited as Faculty at the Spine Deformity Course at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS).**

It was a privilege to engage with esteemed colleagues and young spine surgeons from across the country and also several international spine surgeons from across the world in an academically stimulating environment.

I had the opportunity to participate in a focused debate on the role of Detethering prior to scoliosis correction, discussing indications, biomechanics, and decision-making strategies in complex deformity cases. Such academic discussions are essential to refine our perspectives and improve patient outcomes.

Additionally, I presented a surgical video demonstrating the technique of costoplasty, highlighting key steps, technical nuances, and strategies to optimize correction while maintaining safety.

Grateful for the enriching exchange of ideas and the collaborative spirit that continues to drive advancements in spine deformity surgery.
