In tongue lesions, choosing the right type of biopsy helps ensure accurate diagnosis and avoids repeat procedures.
Many patients don’t know that there are two common types of tongue biopsy:
✔️ Punch Biopsy: A small circular tool is used to take a tissue sample.
✔️ Incisional Biopsy: A blade is used to remove an adequate portion of the lesion for detailed testing.
Sometimes, a punch biopsy may not provide enough tissue, which can lead to a repeat biopsy.
An incisional biopsy often gives a more adequate tissue sample for accurate oral cancer diagnosis.
The goal is clear diagnosis in the first attempt, so treatment can start without delay.
If you have a suspicious tongue ulcer or lesion, consult a specialist for proper evaluation.
