DECORTICATION - Key Technique in
GBR used to improve bone growth for dental implants

❓WHAT❓A surgical procedure of making small perforations or incisions in the cortical bone. The term
“decortication” is derived from the Latin “decorticare,” meaning to “strip off the bark,” which metaphorically describes the action of removing the outer cortical layer of bone.

❓PURPOSE❓Promotes bleeding, releases bone-forming cells from underlying marrow, and improves the physical bond between the grafted bone and the recipient site

❓HOW TO DO❓Pilot holes are created in the cortical bone using cross-cut fissure burs or small round burs

❓BENEFITS❓⚙️Decortication of intact bone may speed upthe process of getting blood vessels, osteoblasts, and pluripotential cells to grafted sites.

⚙️Perforating the bony cortex also may increase the mechanical interlocking of a bone graft and a recipient-site, which may improve its stability.

THIS TECHNIQUE ensures better integration of graft materials, leading to stronger, healthier bone foundations for future implants. Precision matters in building confident smiles
