विटामिन बी12 हमारे शरीर की तमाम सेल्स, चाहे वे हमारी चमड़ी में हों, आंत में या मुंह में, की कार्यप्रणाली के लिए यह जरूरी विटामिन है. इन सभी सेल्स का नियंत्रण इनमें स्थित न्यूक्लियस के डीएनए और आरएनए द्वारा होता है. और इनके लिए यह एक अनिवार्य विटामिन है. बी12 न मिले तो यह न्यूक्लियस काम ही नहीं करेगा, इसीलिए इसकी कमी हो तो हर सेल ठीक से काम करना बंद कर देगी l विटामिन बी12 हमारे नर्वस सिस्टम की कार्यप्रणाली को दुरुस्त रखने का काम भी करता है. यानी यह मस्तिष्क और शरीर की सारी तंत्रिकाओं में करंट के बहने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा करता है. तभी अगर इस विटामिन की कमी हो जाए तो हमें कई न्यूरोलॉजिकल प्रॉब्लम पैदा हो सकती हैं. फिर विटामिन बी12 उन सेल्स के मैच्योर होने में भी बहुत जरूरी कारक है जो हमारी हड्डियों में रहकर रक्त बनाते हैं. इसीलिए शरीर में बी12 न हो तो हमें एक अलग ही किस्म का एनीमिया हो सकता है जिसे "मेगालोब्लास्टिक एनीमिया" कहते हैं lइस विटामिन का बेहद जरूरी संगी-साथी फॉलिक एसिड होता है. यह भी इन सारे कामों में बराबर का रोल अदा करता है. इसीलिए कई बार तो शरीर में बी12 की मात्रा ठीक-ठाक भी रही हो लेकिन यदि फॉलिक एसिड की कमी हो जाए तब भी वे बीमारियां आ सकती हैं जो आमतौर पर बी12 की कमी से हुई मानी जाती हैं.

दरअसल ये दोनों विटामिन एक संगत में काम करते हैं. इसीलिए होमियोपैथिक डॉक्टर भी विटामिन बी12 की कमी वाले मरीज को अकेला cal phos न देकर हमेशा इसे Lecithin और ferrum के साथ ही देते हैं.

विटामिन बी12 केवल मांस, मछली, दूध और पनीर से ही प्राप्त होता है. यह न तो हरी सब्जियों में होता है, न फलों में, जैसा कि हमें प्राय: गलतफहमी रहती है. हां फॉलिक एसिड लगभग हर भोज्य पदार्थ में मौजूद होता है – सारी सब्जियों में और फलों में. मीट-मछली में भी यह पाया जाता है. परंतु इनकी दिक्कत यह है कि इन्हें देर तक गर्म करने पर इनका फॉलिक एसिड नष्ट हो जाता है l
