What is ABA
Applied Behavior Analysis is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied to improve socially significant behavior and to identify the variables responsible for the improvement of behavior.

Behavior, as defined within ABA, refers to any activity that a human being can do.

Behavior does NOT refer only to problem behaviors
Behavior refers to all activities of a human being, including eating, sleeping, talking, crying, hitting, etc.
The primary goal of Applied Behavior Analysis is to increase desirable socially significant behaviors and decrease undesirable socially significant behaviors.

ABA can be used in any environment at any time. It is a “way of thinking”, a way of approaching interaction with individuals.

The progress of a child greatly depends upon family members, caregivers, and individuals in ALL environments using basic ABA principles.

Failure to do this will often result in lack of generalization of skills
Failure to do this may result in problem behaviors occurring only in specific settings, in which ABA techniques are not being used.
Terminology

Reinforcement- any consequence following a behavior that increases the likelihood that the behavior will occur again

Punishment- any consequence following a behavior that decreases the likelihood that the behavior will occur again

Primary Reinforcer- any object, item or activity that is intrinsically reinforcing (e.g. food, water, sleep)

Secondary Reinforcer- any object, item or activity that has been paired with a primary reinforcer in order to gain reinforcing value

Extinction- no longer reinforcing a previously reinforced behavior

Extinction Burst- temporary but significant increase in a behavior following the implementation of extinction, will decrease if extinction is continued

ABA therapy can be implemented in any environment such as the clinic, the home, at school and in the community. An Applied Behavior Analysis treatment package will be created. After the evaluation is completed, an individualized treatment plan will be proposed that will best fit the needs of your child. Your child will receive 1:1 therapy along with ongoing analysis of his progress to ensure he is continuing to progress and succeed.
