प्लेसेंटा (Placenta) गर्भावस्था के दौरान माँ और बच्चे के बीच एक life-line की तरह काम करता है। यह बच्चे को कई तरह से protect (सुरक्षित) करता है:

1. पोषण और ऑक्सीजन देना
• माँ के खून से ऑक्सीजन और ज़रूरी पोषक तत्व (ग्लूकोज़, अमीनो एसिड, विटामिन, मिनरल) प्लेसेंटा के ज़रिए बच्चे तक पहुँचते हैं।
• इससे बच्चा बढ़ता और विकसित होता है।

2. कचरे को बाहर निकालना
• बच्चे के शरीर में बनने वाला कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड और अन्य अपशिष्ट प्लेसेंटा माँ के खून में भेज देता है, ताकि वे उसके शरीर से बाहर निकल जाएँ।

3. संक्रमण से सुरक्षा
• प्लेसेंटा एक बैरियर (ढाल) की तरह काम करता है।
• यह कई बैक्टीरिया और हानिकारक तत्वों को बच्चे तक पहुँचने से रोकता है (हालाँकि कुछ वायरस और दवाइयाँ पार कर सकती हैं)।

4. हार्मोन बनाना
• प्लेसेंटा कई ज़रूरी हार्मोन (जैसे hCG, प्रोजेस्टेरोन, एस्ट्रोजन) बनाता है, जो गर्भावस्था को बनाए रखने और बच्चे की सुरक्षा में मदद करते हैं।

5. इम्यून प्रोटेक्शन
• माँ की कुछ एंटीबॉडीज़ (IgG) प्लेसेंटा के ज़रिए बच्चे तक पहुँचती हैं।
• इससे बच्चे को जन्म के बाद शुरुआती महीनों तक बीमारियों से लड़ने की ताकत मिलती है।
